Pull out the motor or the transmission?

I have an oil leak coming from the wading plug hole in the bellhousing of my 300TDI defender.
Ive tried using the "Leave it alone and hope it goes away" technique but as usual, it is just slowly getting worse.
The defender has just over 200000km on the clock so I thought I would change the engine crank seal, gearbox seal and change the clutch plate, preasure plate, fork and bearing all at once.

The question is, am I better off dropping the transferbox and gearbox out or is it easier to just lift the engine out.

I have an engine crane and a concrete floor but no transmission jack etc.
Can you drop the transferbox and gearbox using the engine crane through the front door by removing the centre cubby box and slinging them from above?

Pulling the gearbox out would give me a chance to clean all the built up oil and crud off the gearbox but pulling the engine out gives easier access to the clutch and crank seal.

    Any oppinions out there?

I would pull the motor out, I have had my county engine out a v8 and it was very easy to do, I did remove the radiator, and front grill though, this means you have way more room, less likely to wreak the radiator and most engine cranes will not lift the engine high enough to get over if it was still in place.
once out it is very easy to get a preasure cleaner onto the transmision.

Given what you have (concrete floor & engine crane), I think it would be faster lifting the engine out.

That's what I opted to do on my 300Tdi for a clutch change.

There's not a lot to disconnect to get the motor out (starter, alternator, fuel lines, fuel cut off wire, air cleaner, intercooler, radiator) and it's all within easy reach. The beauty of a 300Tdi .

Another vote for engine out. Very difficult job to drop the gearbox & transfer assembly in these things without the right gear, engine is no harder than any other vehicle and easier than many.
