    D2 TD5 vs Fender TD5 Performance

    Hi all,
i was wondering what the difference is between the D2 TD5 (101kw) and Defender TD5 (90kw)?
    Arn't they the same engine?
Also what is the performance difference on the road? Is the D2 much quicker? And what about 80-110km/hr?
Does chipping them even things out?

    Interested in your thoughts

Basically exactly the same engine year for year, only difference I can recall is the wastegate is electronically controlled on the D2's which it isnt on the Defender.

Power difference is just down to the ECU Map.

The Auto D2 has more torque than the manuals.

    250lb/ft as opposed to 221lb/ft.

Td5's can be chipped to much higher levels.

So why would LR want the Defender to have less power?
Will the Defender run on worse quality fuel or something?

Surely it is in their best interests to have as much power as possible in every vehicle.

Defender is also lower geared. The Auto D2 gains about 10% extra from the torque converter.

I had initially heard it was due to the induction architecture when fitting the TD5 to the Defender body.

But when I found out that they dont run the boost modulator - which I suspect is for remote reliability reasons, then I understood it to be due to lower peak boost pressures than the Disco. The modulator automatically winds back the boost as I understand it when things are getting a little to warm for the motor.

Mind you, the Puma TD4 is still only about 90kw, so it does make you wonder.

Re performance, I'm not sure when a Defender would be faster. They are heavier and blockier with the same motor with less power.
    Cheers

I recentley purchased a flashable ECU ex a Defender with an upgrade.
Fitted it to my D2 and it did work.
It was too harsh in power delivery, all or nothing as the turbo modulator wasnt operating.
I had it re-set by the vendor to fix a few issues,ie Turbo Modulator,SLABS computer. It smoothed it out nicely. The aircon, cruise control, temp gauge were all re-instated.It made the D2 MUCH more driveable in traffic, almost like a new vehicle. It was only marginaly more powerfull where I need the power boost most, highway and towing,it did hang onto the boost better,so Im guessing was up on torque somewhat.
I sent it back and its had a better D2 map fitted which Im told will increase hwy/towing response. Its due back any time now.

    Interesting
Is there any particular years that are better than others, and worth spending the extra $$$ on? Or is km's more important?

All the reasons above are true. All can be overcome fairly easily except for one - and that is that you don't want a defender being faster than a passenger car. The defender is cheaper and you can't have it going better than the expensive one.
