    Coils for 3.5 Rangie

    Hi Guys
    Some advice please.
Young Jimmys Rangie died again today.I told him its the coil but he wouldnt have it.
Anyway it was as he put another in and away it went, runs nice.
He uses those GT40 transformer coils, its the second on its burnt out/destroyed in 6 months.
Will need to double check wether he has the specified GT40TR resistor type or the GT40T non resistor.
Hi has Optospark points free ignition.
Do the Rangies have a ceramic ballast resistor like the old Valiants have??? If so I havent seen one on his,its possibly been removed when the optospark was fitted.
If there is no Ballast resistor fitted shouldnt he be running the GT40T non resistor coil.
ALSO,the Bosch website says the GT40 coils are for POINTS ignitions.Should he be running the transformer coil that suits electronic ignitions????
If so same question as above resistor ballast style or non ballast depending on the exsistance of the factory ballast resistor.
    THANKS HEAPS

Turn the ignition on and measure the voltage at the coil. If it is 12 volts, then there is no ballast resistor. If it is 6 to 9 volts, then there is a ballast resistor.

GT40 coils are designed to run without a ballast resistor. Using one with a ballast resistor will mean a poor quality spark, but the coil won't burn out because of it.

GT40R coils are designed to run with a ballast resistor. Using one without a ballast resistor will see the coil burnt out in a short space of time.

I had the exact same question when I got my RRC I put electronic points on as well, ermm cant remember the name though, anyhow........
I ended up putting the GT40r with a ballast.

It starts no issues, in fact pretty damn good, had the same coil maybe 2-3 years now but its not a daily driver but still 2-3 must be ok?

I would also check is the input tollerance for the the electronic points mine is something like 11-18v but i dont know if they all are?

    Hi Andy,

The stock set up for a resistor coil used a resistor wire........ white with pink tracer. Has a silver wire inside. The other + wire to the coil (white with purple tracer) is 12V and supplies power only while the starter is turning.

    cheers, DL

I could never find the ballast wire in mine as it was connected to the 12v when I bought it. It reads 12v all the time so I put in the resistor.

Definately a coil issue. He borrowed a coil and its going well again. Its burnt 2 transistor coils in a few months.
Didnt get him around to check the issue out further after work.My new chipped ECU turned up today and was keen to fit it.Thought it would be wise to download the latest upgrade to my Nanocom before fitting the ECU.The Nanocom is now sick and wont workI cant now fit the new ECU
