After driving my D2 on the weekend, I noticed a very still gear change, especially changing into 1st and 2nd. I also noticed a lot of play in the gear lever. So thinking that oil is not the problem, I removed the center console and took the top off the gearbox where the gear lever is. Turns out that a small plastic bush held in place by a spring clip, fell off and went into the gearbox, hence the cause of a stiff and notchy gear change.
Anyway, lucky it is an easy fix and the parts have been ordered, and it should be back on the road again soon. So I might as well change the oil while I'm at it. My question is though, what is the best oil for the R380 gearbox, I know they recommend Texaco MTF94, but is there a suitable alternative that works just as well? I've considered using a 75W80 MTF oil, but is there something more suitable that anyone has used that produces good results?
Your advice would be very much appreciated.

I put sytrans in mine and it has made the world of difference. It used to crunch on 1st, 2nd change when cold and do all sorts of crap but now its heaps smoother.

Stepho 62 gives good advice. That is the correct oil as advised by LR for the R380.
I also use it in my LT77, no complaints.
We seem ti have this discussion every week.
Castrol Syntrans is the go - may not be available at all retailers but is carried by your local castrol depot.

What is the more important figure to go for on d2 gearbox?
Note I am going to refer to oils that are avilable by here by usus.
1) Castrol BOT130M, API GL-4, 15.1cST@100*C, 75W90, full synthetic.
2) Castrol MTF1067 Plus, 75W85, API GL-4, specs not available as it has been superseded.
3) Castrol BOT 402, 75W85, 13.1cST@100*C, API GL-4, full synthetic.
BOT130m available but BOT402 is rare.
Any advise please.
Hendrik I use Valvoline Duragear 75w85 Synthetic blend in these and it works well, about half the price of Syntrans BUT that is the best to use if you can get it/ afford it.
Spare a thought for the Rodeo owners where they specify Syntrans for gearbox AND transfer about 6 litres all up at $30/litre!

It's not that clear cut,my R380 only likes Transmax ATF and Redline MTL,a mates only goes for Penrite light gearbox oil so Syntrans isn't the be-all end all. Pat
Replaced oil with the BOT402.
Surprised with the improvement but when cold 1st to 2nd still sticky.
Will a 75W85 with around 11 viscosity not be better?
