So if it is the extra height of fuel in the tank, that could indicate that the lift pump is not working. And the fuel injection pump can't pull the fuel all the way from the tank, through a dodgy lift pump and the fuel filter, when the fuel level is lower.

As`I said my problem was not on the lift side of the pump.Just leaking around the handle of the pump.My fuel consump figures have been better since replacement.Had something similar happen on a 2a diesel pump-that was so bad left a trail on the road.
Start it up while on stands etcjust crawl under and check-use a tissue or something to check if there's any fluid..You will be surprised by how much fuel is escaping.It was comong from the pumping section therefore not yet affecting pump perfommance i my case,but not long before major probs I feel.As always carry a spare it has been fitted and now have a new spare in the kit

Thanks guys, i got under it today and got rough with it while it was running, much to my surprise i got a slight spray of diesel in the face. The conjute cover of some cables had eaten away a fuel line due to vibration, about two feet away from the lift pump on the inlet tube. The piping as also eaten away at a couple other tubes.
The plan of attack is to rip out the tubes from tank to engine and then back again. I got some 8mm tubing from work and will get stuck into on my next break which is in 7 days. I am going to need some tips and pointers from all that are in the no. I'm hoping not to drop the tank because i haven't ever done that but if the job is going to be done properly it will have to be done. Any advice would be awesome.
The car runs so much better with a full tank. Starts after 5 or 6 turns of the engine and runs like she's eaten her weeties, fun to drive.

It is good that you found the problem now.
You probably only need to replace the line between the sedimentor and the lift pump, and not between tank and sedimentor.
I'm pretty sure you will find that the fittings are CAV. A hyd hose place like Pirtek or Enzed should have something suitable if you need them.
Just thought i would follow up. I replaced the fuel line from sedimenter to lift pump and it fixed the starting problem and drives like a dream.
The first time i cranked it over with new fuel line (un-primed) it started easier then it ever has, now it starts almost striaght away

Good work Gibbs. You have given me something to look at on my 97 Tdi as well as I have a similar problem and have been chasing it for ages now.
Are there any issues with fitting an inline 'leccy pump? It would sure make bleeding the system easy and do away with a problem part.
