    Stroked 3.5 V8

I have recently seen a 3.5 litre V8 motor in bits.
It had a crankshalf with more counter weights and appeared to have had the crankcase clearenced a little bit as I suspect the crankstroke was longer.
It runs a standard bore, but with special pistons which also appeared to have the bottom of the skirt shorten for a longer stroke.(so the crank counter weights miss)
The rods appear to be standard 3.5 items.
This motor blew up a piston and needs new items.
    To the brains trust.
What pistons are needed and what sort of crank is in it.
What would this motor be like rebuilt and its capacity.
    Who would have built it?

Being a 3.5 the stroked capacity would most likely be 4.2/4.3 ltr, common conversions were done by Vitesse developments or Ritter in Melbourne depending on its age, TRS in Adelaide also did kits.. I would call them and ask first up, i believe some used holden 6 or maybe ford 6 pistons or custom. The 3.5 was always missing a decent stroke so with a stroker conversion they tend to pull like a 14yo school boy in the back shed .

There were several suppliers of stroked 3.5 engines.

My previous RR ('86) had a 3.5 litre bored and stroked to 4.6 made by John Davis Motorworks. John's brother (and ex-partner), Bruce, now runs Davis Performance Landys out of the same location at Annangrove, NSW.

Another supplier was Vitesse Developments (?) in Victoria. (The Vitesse part is correct.)

    G`day Ron ,

It could be anything , mostly if you are right about Standard pistons , it would need to be measured as the strokes dont look that much different but it could also have a 4.4 crank and there are 2 different ones also buick cranks have been used but ford 3.5inch pistons( i think it was ) were mated .

The common Stroker Kits are 4.2ltr which uses 2nd over bore size and 4.3ltr which uses 3rd over bore size .

It could be that someone has known the strokers and made one which wasn`t bored as this can result in liner movement and from the sentence above would give 4.1 ltr possibly .

I know Ritters used Rover rods , don`t know if they were modified and don`t know what rods Vitesse used .

Though as BigJon got a 4.2? kit from Pierre which is a Vitesse either one may be able to tell you but i don`t know .

The usual pistons used are know as Omega , specially made heavier/thicker pistons with a shorter skirt . They look similar to a rover that has tha skirt shortened but have a much thicker wall of alloy allround but when actually compaired side by side look not like a rover at all .

This is only an opinion of mine and not part of your question ........

Stroker engines go well , pull well and are reliable to a certain stage but i wouldn`t expect to get the 3, 4 ,5 hundred thousand ks that a std 3.5 will easily give if maintained .

People have a view on the 4.6 reliability , i put the 4.6 infront of the strokers .

A 4.6 may well fail but it will normally still drive , when a stroker fails it is not uncommon to break the pistons and drag a liner into the crank or put a rod out , or not initally brake a piston but drag the liner into the crank .

The mess that`s left it`s a bit hard to tell what happend first but is certainly common to break/crack pistons so if a very noisy lifter/liner ( which it isn`t ) is heard in a stroker it is on borrowed time .

I`d have and use one but i`d also listen to it very b closely always .

Just to end if the one you`ve looked at does use the stroker Omega pistons they`ll be over $1000 for a set and the main reason most broken strokers stay broken .

    Cheers
    Peter .
