    Stainless Steel Tubing

    Does anybody know where I might source some flexible stainless steel tubing here in South Australia? I'm currently converting my defender to veggie oil, and I want to make a heat exchanger for the auxiliary tank. But not being from around here (not being from the same hemisphere, truth be told ), I'm not familiar with where I can source what I need.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    You require stainless steel hose.

    What size do you require?
    How long?
    What pressure are you expecting it to hold?
    What end connections do you need, stainless steel hose can't be clamped, fittings need to be tigged to it using braid rings, it is a job for the experienced stainless steel hose fitter. (I was involved with this product for 15 years)

    If you can give me this information I can give you details, data sheets and pricing. (I no longer sell this product but still have connections, should be able to dig up some connections in SA as well)

    Not sure yet. I had planned to run 1/2 inch (12mm) coolant hose to the tank and pass it through the heat exchanger, so I was going to use the nearest size to the hose that I could safely make a coil from.

    Something along the lines of what is in this picture, with the input and output protruding through a cover plate to be bolted to the top of the tank. The tank is about a foot deep, and I plan to have the fuel intake running down the middle of said coil. I don't have exact measurements right now, but I'm sure that I could come up with them for you if needs be.

    Not much - coolant pressure goes between 10-15 psi as far as I know, so the heating system should be the same.

    Barbed fittings, that I could clamp 1/2 inch hose onto.

    This was something I had hoped to be able to put together myself - I hadn't planned on it being quite so complicated

    Copper tubing has much better heat transfer properties than stainless.

    You can buy some copper tubing and a pipe bender and make up whatever you want. Any plumber can silver solder a couple of barb fittings to the ends.

    Believe me, copper would be by far the easiest solution for me too. Unfortunately, copper oxidies with SVO (not such a big problem), and it polymerises SVO (big problem).

    1/2" not a problem size, pressure should be OK to be without external braid.
    Looking at the pic the tank has female connections (?), I assume BSP?

    Unfortunately you can't get a seal with clamping, you will need to fit swivel connections (only available in female so you will need a nipple to connect to the tank). The swivels will have to be tig welded on. If you decide to go this way let me know the length you require and I will let you know around what price you should expect to pay.

    I would try Paramount Browns at Cavan.

    They have ALL SORTS of good stuff for a bloke...

    Sort of like a big junk yard.

    I know the place all too well - as it happens I popped in there on the way home from work today. Found a bunch of stuff that I do want to pick up, but alas, nothing along the lines of stainless tubing. The nearest think I could see to being useful was aluminium tubing of various diameters, but I'm not sure if it is suitable or not, both for bending without cracking, and how it may react to SVO.

    Thanks - didn't know that. But I know people who have used copper without issues, and some commercial kits use copper. A quick search reveals that a coating of "chicken skin" collects on the copper, which if it sloughs off would be captured by the filter.

    Aluminium seems to be OK. Al tube can be bent depending on the type.


    EDIT - why not just make it from copper then "tin" the outside of the copper tube when you are finished. If there is no exposed copper then there is nothing to react. Fuel tanks are often lined with solder, and/or repaired that way, so it is obviously unreactive.
