    300 TDi timing belt**###!!*

How on earth do you actually get a new timing belt onto a TDi 300, thing seems to be about 2 sizes too small. I had the same problem with a new serpentine belt a while ago....I ended up putting the old one back on 'cos I simply couldn't get the new one on?????

They're supposed to be 'tight' as there isn't a great deal of adjustment with the tensioner. I take it you are fitting the kit with 1 piece flanged crank pulley?
The flanged pulley can make it a little more difficult, but I find it easier to dummy fit the tensioner and idler, Tighten the tensioner allen head bolt at the lowest tensioner position(IE when the belt is slackest) and then remove the idler. Feed the belt over the crank pulley, the fuel pump and cam and tensioner. Gather the belt across to the left where the idler sits and try and wiggle the idler onto its stud when the belt is reasonably tight against it. Tighten/ seat the idler. This will leave the belt slack on the tensioner side, and then tension the belt, rotate engine 2 to 3 revolutions, and check belt tension again.

Sorry not very good at imparting this explanation, but hope it helps a little.
    BTW, you HAVE got a 118tooth belt? Not a 200Tdi 109tooth one?

Jay seriously I can fit the serpentine belt on my 300 and I'm a girl....

are you actually putting a socket on the tensioner and lifting it up when putting the belt on? are you routing it properly? Sorry to teach you to suck eggs but I don't see how you can be having troubles unless you brought the wrong size belt its easy...

    belt size 1580....alternatives 1575, 1585

Surely your a LADY DB! Not just a 'girl'

The early belt (1595mm long, ERR3287) will fit the later D1 from late TA(1996) but will be loose. The later belt (1580mm long ERR5911) will not fit the early D1 300Tdi, Maybe you have, as DB suggests, the wrong length serpentine belt?

    Lou,

From MA(1994 to 1995) D1, the longer ERR3287 1595mm long belt, as these had larger diameter alternator pulleys. The TA onward (1996 on) took a shorter belt (ERR5911 1580mm long) due to smaller diameter alternator pulley.
The pulleys are interchangeable aswell(Disco to Disco only, Defender take different alternators) so if you want to help with low engine speed charging you can fit the later pulley and shorter belt.
That 15mm difference makes it almost impossible to fit the shorter belt to an early model, even with the tensioner all the way up.

Hmmm! interesting points you raise. The engine is in fact a new factory replacement long motor, made in Brazil and does not have a Landrover series engine number. I'm assuming it would be the later model.
justinc, your explanation was quite clear thanks
Dullbird, I'm sure you are a lady, and, not at all dull. It's my misfortune to be a 69 yr old 48Kg gentleman with well advanced Rheumatoid Arthritis, the strength in my hands is as that of a 5 yr old girl.....maybe
I'll see how I go removing the tensioner pulley as suggested.
I'll also double check the belts with the supplier.

    Thanks guys and gal
