Dave, the answer lies in the type of smell. Burning clutch is like overheated brake smell. It is possible, with greasy hands everywhere that there is a hot smell after the install, but this should only last a few minutes...

have had gearbox and clutch done on 95 defender now when i tow i get a hot smell comming from under car was told maybe grease on exhaust oil etc.could it be the clutch bedding in or something more serious noticed it was pulling a bit slower didnt seem to have the power on the highway to pull boat up to 100 .1400kgs tow weight. could this be an adjustment or the new clutch ideas welcome cheers dave

Sometimes Greasy or oily fingers touching the exhaust pipe when doing the job and then it burns off and causes smells, usually goes away after a couple of days driving.
