    300tdi glow plugs

My 300 tdi disco does not like to start on Canberra's cold mornings. There is power getting to the glow plugs but nothing much seems to happen so I assume the glow plugs are now u/s.... I am just wondering of they are hard to change or if there are any little tricks to make getting the old ones out and new ones in easier.

    Any advice welcome.

only pain in the butt is to remove the first glowy as you have to take off the aircon compressor(if u have one) off to get the bugger out. little trick as well run a wire from your posative batt to the first glowy just for a few sec's then try starting her up. if she does then its the plugs.

    cheers simo

yes, obviously check the circuitry first and see if there is current getting to the plugs....

be aware that if you want to change them they can be a bit carboned at times, and if so they can be difficult little buggers to extract.... be prepared to get physical with them....

Off topic, but do you live in Canberra or the South Coast, I'm at Moruya Heads if you're down this way, Regards Frank.

you dont need your glow plugs I would be looking else where......

you checked the condition of your battery?
could it be your starter motor?

Is it not starting at all or is it just slow?....could also be a bad earth.

Yep, I'm with DB here... The 300TDi doesn't need glow plugs and will start comfortably without.

I'd be looking at the 'Ooomph' from you battery and making sure the connections to the starter (especially the earth) are sound.

I'm with DB & camel landy... look elsewhere.

I transplanted a 300tdi into my county 12years ago and have never connected the glow plugs. I'm in Christchurch and the cold mornings can be harsh here but I have never had a problem.

Thanks guys, according to my multimeter there is power getting to the plugs when you first turn on the key, then goes off when you can hear the relay click off. Most of the time the car starts right away, its just those few sub zero degree mornings that we get, when I have to break the ice on the fish pond type mornings. When I lived on the South Coast it was never a problem, but it never got that cold.

Battery and starter seem ok as it does eventually start if I let it turn over long enough. I am assuming that after a while turning over the compression heats things up enough to help it fire.

Could be the fuel waxing up.

Can you get Alpine mix where you are ? If you can I'd fill with that over winter

just so you know when we were off roading in the french alps every 300 tdi started on the trip without trouble after having the fuel filter warmed up NONE of them had glow plugs wired in and the temps in the evening were getting down to minus 17 so imagine what they were like in the early hours

The only thing I can say in regards to the glow plugs is I had a guy told me he had starting issues and he traced it back to bing the glow plug relay sticking and not allowing the cricuit to close apprently when this happens the car will not start AT ALL.

I reckon you need to be looking at the starter........do a search for it I had the problem that started off like yours in the cold then progressed to not starting in the heat... search for "intermitant starting problems"
