What temp. should a 300tdi run.

Hope someone can help me here. I Have just installed a Madman EMS 2 Guage to my 300tdi and am now getting a very accurate temperature reading from the top of the motor near the thermostat.
Is an average reading of 88-92 degrees right. Also Towing a trailer today up a long steep hill it hit 99 degrees. The original tep guage hardly moved at this temperature.
Is this O.K or should I be looking for further possible problems. I have just had the radiator reconditioned and the water pump is about 20000km old. My Fuel pump has been tweaked and It has a 2.5" exhuast.

mine sat on 83 - 85 right across from ceduna to perth , head wind. It would go down a little when backed off but my speed was on average from tassie to perth was a neat 100km (gps data), I have mine set to alarm at 98 degrees and havnt seen that but it would depend on where your sensor is I would think. The temp gauge dosnt vary, sits nice and stable. I would say you may be just a little high but wouldnt worry, just an eye on things.
    cheers

All normal IMO and exactly what I've observed over 100,000km and two t/stats.

I have a temp unit located in the same area as you, and my 300 Tdi gives similar readings. I also have a tweaked fuel pump (and upgraded intercooler).

Down here in SA at the moment (given the ambient temperatures) I'm running a little cooler on the open road - more like 79-85. Usually however I'm up in the range that you mentioned.

The spike up a hill is nothing to worry about in my opinion... mine does the same... just so long as the cooling system is efficient enough to bring the temp down swiftly once you're over the crest (and yours is by the sounds of it). In fact I'm surprised you didn't go higher than 99 with the trailer on the back. You must have been taking it nice and easy - a good move.

Before summer I'll be getting the radiator rodded and all hoses replaced, just as a preventative thing (the car's only done 145,000km) but I figure better safe than sorry with the cooling system in a 300 TDi. It'll be interesting to see if the temps come down much, if at all.

Thanks Guys. I think it would have gotten hotter but I did back off. Also once i had crested the hill the temp. went down almost immediately. What would the maximum temp. you would let it reach before backing off?

That depends on how far it is to the top I guess! Then again I'm not one for overly stressing a motor unnecessarily, so tend to back off at about the 98 mark.

That being said I've had it up to 106 degrees at one stage, getting near to the top of a particularly long and steep hill, but that's still well below the boiling point of the coolant. Even so I wouldn't recommend making a habit of that sort of thing, not if you want to keep the head in good shape.
