I once had a similar problem on my Td5 it was a loose hose clip on the hose to the intercooler that leaked only when on boost
I agree with others on exhaust manifold gasket, and with Rudolf on the sealant.

ok so the manifold was put on with a gasket and gasket paste.........
I found a split in the hose to the airfilter from turbo we have tapped it up with self amalgamating tape just to see if noise changes.
have also found some free play in the turbo shaft. probably at a rough guess around a mm worth....
the car was at first spewing out black smoke o start up...which it has always done so not concerned. but then black smoke on acceleration fllowed by small amounts of white smoke. Since taping up the hole in the pipe the white smoke doesn't seem to be there but the scream still is.
I stuck my head in the engine bay while Ian gave it a blip and there is still exhaust gas getting out from somewhere looks like from back of the down pipe area/manifold area. So Ian is going to strip it down again to try and seal it.....this will be the third timw he has stripped it down to seal it![]()
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
And maybe this time a straight edge down and across the manifold to check for warping. Have you checked the intercooler for pinholes?

The white smoke could just be some oil in the inlet system from the breather pipe.
Has the intercooler been cleaned?
With age it could fill with oil.
Also on a old engine the a small pudle of oil collects just before the turbo and when started could be drawn in by turbo. Hence first black then white smoke.
intercooler was cleaned that was mentioned in the first post.
The car is a heavy breather......always has been.
I got it wrong in the post above this is not the 3rd time it will be stripped down it will be the first time taking the manifold off after fitting...and that is were he thinks the exhaust gas is coming from right on the back corner.
he has sealed up around the exhaust pipe a couple of times since being done.
So can pin holes in the intercooler cause this scream noise also? I should try and film the noise so you can hear it.

Just to recap on this had the manifold off there wsa a tiny black bit on the corner... new gasket new sealant and it has stopped the exhaust gas leak that we could see but not the screaming noise.
Neighbour from across the came over listened to it (he rebuilds garrets for is work) and said he definitely thinks its the turbo..he said he can feel A tiny bit of back and forward movement in the shaft and also said some other mubo jumbo. which made sense I just can't remember it but was a lot to do with the rings and the bearings etc etc So looks like if it wasn't already damaged it was the running away that did the damamge or at least helped it on its way to failing.
I have been on the paddocks website looking at prices does anyone know of a garret supplier here in Oz we can get into contact with for a quote....need to work out whether the UK will be cheaper. Oh got our neighbour getting a quote also from his work for a rebuild![]()

Sorry Lou - I read the title of the thread and though it was something along the lines of the screaming coming from the back seat of my '67 Valiant at the Caringbah drive in years and years agooooo......![]()
Lou,
ANY axial movement (back and forth) with the shaft is a sign of imminent failure i'm afraidThe scream could even be the blades touching the housing
