    Snotted the petrol tank yesterday

OK. Out 'n' about yesterday in George, on a pretty badly cut out track in the Coromandel Ranges (this side of the ditch) I successfully snotted a rock with the petrol tank and it was full of petrol at the time

Luckily it didn't rupture all over the ground.

While trying to carefully negotiate a rock I have had problems with in the past I landed right on top of the tank A short time later I smell petrol fumes in the cab and after ruling all other options out and a careful look at the tank there are weeps around the edge of the tank.

I am not certain whether the damage is bad, you can't tell from the outside where any damage is, but I am certain it is leaking from somewhere like a burst seam. I will replace the tank with a second hand one from a wrecker so no real worries there. But when it comes to fixing this one, what's the best way to find where it's leaking from?

    Cheers

Once you've got it out, blank up all the connections and put a low pressure source of air into it (ie from a compressor via a regulator). You only want about 3 PSI for a start.
Mix a squirt of detergent with some water and brush it over the whole tank. You will see bubbles/foam from where its leaking.

Dont be tempted to use the outlet from a vaccuum cleaner or other blower as a source of air as the motors have brushes which spark so could be a source of ignition for fumes in the tank.

Thanks Steve. By the way, don't these tanks have a double skin on them?
