My 93 200tdi d1 has the same Clunk. Been over everything (as has my mechanic) and still cant find t.

Loose brake caliper?

Hi,

I'd be revisiting the ball joint. They don't need much slop to start making a lot of noise.

It could also be play in the conical hole it attaches to the diff housing through. This can wear also, and it gets progressively worse the more the joint can work it. Take the split pin out and see how easy it is to turn the nut. It shouldn't want to tighten any more.

Don't know if D1's have the Boge load leveller. If so, it could be the ball joint at either end.

nah d1's don't have a load leveller..

Get a helper with big muscles. Put the car in gear, handbrake off and get your blonde assistant to rock it backwards and forwards while you examine, watch, pry, and feel every bush and joint on the rocket.

My bet's the a frame ball joint, but if that's all clear, get the blonde assistant to attempt to move the car from the front, pulling/pushing at right angles to the vehicle axis (attempting to twist the car). As before, look, feel and listen to each bush and joint.

I reckon this is the only way to check out where bush and joint wear is located - visuals are sometimes inconclusive.

The assistant will be exhausted by the time your examination ends - have some refreshment handy.

Right then

Definately no play on the Ball joint

No loose brake caliper

No rear step

No excessivly worn suspension bushes

But.......

Did find that the whole rear left quarter panel seems to "boom" and reverberate when knocked (the right side seems to be braced more with the filler cap coming through it)

Could this be the mysterious "clonk"? I have previously had to re-Sikaflex the roof panel because it would "boom" when off road. Will dismantle the panel next weekend and see about glueing it back together.

Anybody else had this occur? Anybody else with the mysterious "clonk" want to check their panel too?

Did anybody sugget that in the thread (for a six pack)?
