    "Clonk......?"

Hope this title got your attention

Driving the D1 TDi over a bump in the road I occasionally hear a "clonk" coming from the rear. Its the sound I'd expect if the rear door wasn't latched properly. It definately doesn't feel drive train related (that has a few clunks of its own......old diesels hey, gotta love em)

Now I've done a bit of poking around and illiminated the following:

Tow bar tang - Have removed it from tow bar.."Clonk" still present
Rear Door - Have checked for adjustment, wear on hinges etc, nothing obvious..."clonk" still there
Suspension bushes - Have checked and seem to be within spec. Rear control arm bushes and anti roll bar bushed changed less that 12mo ago. Otheres seem within spec ..."clonk" still there
Shock absorbers - OME fitted 18mo ago, all tight and tidy..."Clonk" still there
Bumper ends - Have removed whole bumper for respray and tightened up bumper ends really well (loctite and all)...."Clonk" still there
Rear door handle - Inside one, was loose, have removed to see if it was that...."clonk" still there
Tools under seat - checked, all secure..."clonk" still there
A-frame ball joint - Have crawled underneath and wrestled with Ball joint, as best as possible, to see if there is any movement, there isn't...."Clonk" still there

Have been driven around in the back and can't hear the noise when I am in there. Perhaps the weight shift (115kgs of me in the back) tightens up whatever is "clunking"

Can anybody suggest any other possible sources?

Its a bit frustrating not being able to find the source. If its something minor that doesn't require fixing then I'd be happy to drive along the beat of the "clonk." But at the moment can't rule out that something is on its way out that I need to action.

    Cheers big ears

    Jason

Mmmmmmm i would have said A frame ball joint, but seeing you've ruled that out it could be something in the diff housing (the diff it's self) or somthing loose in the hub (wheel bearings maybe)
I'd check and make shore your exhaust isn't hitting something, a mount could have come loose
Other than that i'd tighten all your bushes etc and if it's still there maybe start working your way forward to prop shaft uni's.
Even when you think you know exactly where the noise is coming from the sound can transfer along chassis rails and axle tubes

Check your Body to chassis bolts in case they are loose.
Check the rear seat latches as these can also give a clock noise if no one is seated in them.

When you do find it let me know as I also have this problem.

Mmmm, ,maybe I'll even come and pick it up! (If I'm right of course)

I would go with either a noisy rear shock, (OME's can be like that) a loose body mounting, or any of the rear swaybar link ball joints or bushes.

Tailgate doors can be a problem, have you adjusted the striker in a bit and tried it again? 8mm allen key.

years ago a mate brought a XE falcon ute, had this pain in the back side rattle in the dash and a clump when flying over speed bumps. any way he sold it to another mate who got plastered and tried to dismount a power pole with it.

50 gold kurgerrands? fell out of the dash. big deal at the time he got to keep the coins in the end, worth quite a bit like 1\2 a house, didn't mean much since he only had 1\2 a face left and had to bury his kid sister who was in the passenger seat.

so maybe your clump is ?????

Don't want to emulate your mates discovery method but if my "Clonk" is Kruger Rands you may get more than a six pack!!

    Cheers
