    More steering box stuff..

Can the sector shaft seal be replaced insitu in a 3 bolt RRC box.

Put the SH 3 bolt box into the Rangie today, bled system, pressurised and it checked for leaks etc, all good. About 2 hours later the seal gave way and sprayed oil everywhere - yeah, can hear the murmurings...."Should have replaced the seal while I had the box out"

I removed the seal fron the old box to see what is involved and it appears to straightforward - other than the double circlip thing.

Also, where can I get a new seal from?

Unless you've already had the drop arm off & back on, that will be the hardest part. Treat it like a tie rod end and it should be ok. As for the seal, you'll have little choice from the main suppliers - it will be the whole kit for the 3 bolt box ($60?). However, if you have time, it is rumored that garyclr4wd ( ebay listing name-located blue mountains area sydney) sells the top & bottom seal by itself for around $15. If you are on good relations with a power steering rebuilder they might let you have a seal, but I doubt it.

Yes it's pretty quick and easy to change that seal. Possibly the easiest seal in a rangerover to change.

However, if it's leaking it's probably because the finish on the sector shaft is damaged. I replaced one that was bent in a crash and the replacement had corrosion around the seal face which made it leak everytime the power assist was used (big oil arcs in the driveway).
I got the local engine rebuilder to grind it back to clean, problem solved.

Got the seal out today, and the other half will track down the part for me tomorrow (I know she loves to do this ) The sector shaft is in geat condition, the bore is OK and there is no play in the shaft.

    help for "old mate"

hi, an old fella travelling around Aus has come into my caravan park recently with a 110 300tdi, and has recently had his bottom seal on steering box blow out, he lost all his oil pretty quick and ran the pump dry for a little bit.
replacing the oil made it work fine again, until steering more than 15 degrees in either direction - the oil drops again.

He's ordered the kit that the seal comes in, but the old fella is going to drive all the way up to Darwin and back (800km each way!) to pay some mechanic to put it in for him! and probably do the whole kit rebuild, but he'll be risking driving it up trying not to turn so much that his oil drops again he says.

He's also priced a new Pump for 700 bucks just because he thinks it might be damaged from running with no oil for a bit.

can you guys give me some info to help this fella out?

1- does he need to get a new pump?

2- can i help him put his new seal in? any special tools needed?

i've got a two fingered puller, a massive shifter and a bit of DIY know how...

I have a brand new power steering pump still in the wrapper for a 300tdi that I've kept as a spare. Can post to you guys if you like. Might get him out of a bind. Could do it for $350.

    thanks

but as i said i'm not even sure he really needs to worry about his pump.
unless someone here with some exp. in this field were to give me some advice that would suggest his pump would be stuffed...

or some advice on the best way to do an install on a new bottom seal would be nice too.

yes. But there are a couple of difrent 3 bolt boxs, one has a chevron type packing and the other has 2 TWO seals. the second one is a PIA to get out.

so retaining clip - seal -washer -seal

hardest bit is getting the pitman arm off, a big hammer on one side then hit it from the other side.

seal washer seal washer seal yes there are 3 seals in there.

Sector Shaft seal on 200tdi steering box

    G'day all

Been reading the threads on steering box seals on the RR's sector shaft and am wondering if any 110 drivers have replaced the sector shaft seal on their steering box? From what I can gather there isn't much (if any) difference between the RR and Defender steering box (200tdi) when it comes to replacing the bottom seal.
I gather removing the drop arm is going to be the more challenging part - but do I need any particular tool to insert the new seals?

    Any advice/comment is appreciated.
