    Unhappy which winch ???

I am in desperate need of a 12v winch for the rangie, the question is which one I am about to launch into making the old gal a dedicated mud truck and a top notch winch is top of my list.

the market is flooded with cheap ($800) winches with plasma ropes etc etc but I need one that will take a flogging off road in some pretty precarious spots, so it needs to work every time and probably in repetitive cycles.....(like when your mates get their tourers stuck down mountains )

Obviously Warn comes to mind but is there an equivalent quality without the high cost. I love the Warn high mount but at 3 grand, that chews into the budget and means that other goodies like diff gears, simex's etc have to be put off for a while.

So, I am looking for some feedback on what you have got that will take an absolute flogging and come back for more, weekend in weekend out

Has anyone got a Premier or Superwinch ??? they look like good value.

If anyone has a 'contact' for Warn where I can save a few bucks, then I am all ears

    thanks

    nutting the rough numbers....

buying one of the aldi $800 winches driving it till it flogs and then rebuilding with the ironman internals is the cheapest way of getting a high quality winch IVe been able to work out....

    in order

the bearings will die first (and might last a long time if you keep them well lubed and free of water)
then the motor will pack in the bush pack (which is a fairly easy drop in replacement item)
    then the gearset will go.

The cable is steel and looks the goods but I wasnt impressed with the ferrules. or the eye so that would warrant replacement.

if you want serious quality skip the usual suspects and head thyself down to a n industrial rigging store.

You can get 2 for that price now. My local had them marked down to $399 from $499 a week or so ago.

I have just been over at outers and was reading about the tigerz winches. they get a good wrap over there but I dont want to outlay 800 smackers for a winch that I will be swearing at when I am axle deep in the sticky stuff and it decides to have a melt down

anyone here have a tigerz 12000lb

The Aldi ones were $409 at my local shop yesterday.

I saw one of the regulars on Outerlimits selling a bunch of high mounts for $1000 each recently. I've seen them go for less than that too.
So if it is a high mount you're after then keep your eyes out for a second hand one. Even a mainland one with the AULRO courier network should see you get one for far less than the price of a new Warn low mount if you're not in an extreme hurry.

Dad picked up an Aldi for $470 a few weeks back., in Bendigo.
Don't intend on doing anything extreme with it, but it seems to be good.

Most winch life is going to be directly related to how you treat it.

For example if you submerge it a few times in muddy water and dont service it, it will break. That is the same if its a $400 Aldi one or a $3k Hi Mount.

Loading themm up with low batteries wont help either!

IMO the best std electric winch you can buy is the Hi Mount. If you have the budget swap the 4.6hp for the 6hp from the XP. The reason that this is the best, is not just because its a Warn, it is incredibly quick, both under load and on load. They are probably the most widely used winch in competition

IMO The best low mount winch available is the XP. It is massively powerful, but draws a fair bit of current.

Not sure what Dave means by going to an industrial rigging store as I would be suprised if they have anything suitable atall, and they wont be cheap!

There are problems with the cheap winches. the gear set seem to be generally ok, but they have things like the motor casing pressed into one set of legs so you cant easily swap motors, where-as on a Warn or Superwinch you can pretty much swap the motors around relativley easily.

I originally had an XD9000 on mine, which I then swapped to run XP's front and rear, and after about 3 months swapped the front one for a Hi Mount. I wish now I had done Hi mounts both ends, but thats not really a viable option anymore for me.

Try and buy the right one the first time

we've got rigging catalogs at work and they list about every winch setup you can dream of in 12/24/240/415v from little 1/2hp 1t jobs up to massive crane winches. One of them makes the winches from scratch and for a price will build you anything you want.

I think (from memory only) the biggest 12v jobby is a 10t 12hp unit. and about the only thing stopping you from front mounting it would be the overall size of the thing and the fact that most of their winches would need a custom cradle.

just buy a tirfor and a can of harden up

I'm pretty shore it was Premier that won the mega winch comparo in the 4wd action mag a little while ago....(it could have been superwinch too, but pretty shore it was premier)

Anyway they did very well and beet all the warn winches (the highmount wasn't in it) they were very impressed with it, if that means anything at all...

Then there's a PTO..........if you can find one.....

Not shore what this model is like....
