I know what you mean.. when you slow the rattle skips a beat or two. It's never worried me enough to mention it. Is yours manual or auto? I wonder whether the auto loads it a bit too much making the idle low for a fraction of a second.
Another diagnosis query on my 2002 D2 TD5. When I come to stop around town the engine seems to “pant” 4 or 5 times before settling down to a gentle idle. It is like a human running up to the stop street, being a bit out of breath and drawing a few quick breaths to catch their breath and then being fine. If it was my RRC, I would suspect a sticky throttle cable. Apart from this little niggle, the thing seems to run very well and economy is OK. I am new to diesels and I believe the TD5 doesn’t have a cable anyway so any suggestions welcome.

It is a normal part of engine managment for around MY2003 onward Disco and Defenders. It will even feel like the engine is switched off at a low speed trailing throttle sometimes.
