    Fuel pump leak

Hi all , My 300 tdi defender has just developed a diesel leak which appears to be coming from the throttle shaft that connects to the accelerator cable and goes into the pump. Fuel is leaking both down the side of the pump and dripping off the throttle arm where the cable attaches. Is this a simple fix i.e replacing a seal or is it going to be a big dollar pump overhaul ?

providing its just the seal failed it can be done in situ.

If the shaft is scored or the housing is damaged its a rebuild job. Not rebuilding it might get you a fix BUT its not going to last.

theres a lip seal on the top of the pump under the arm (the arm should just unbolt from the shaft

the seal can be hoiked up off of the top.

how olds the pump it may pay to unbolt it send it off and do the rest of the engine maintenance stuff while its away.

Grab a Rave Cdrom and its got the instructions on whats involved.

Yep I have a rave cd but it does not cover the internals of the pump. The truck has 325 000 clicks on it. The age of the pump is unknown , looks like it could be the original. How much ball park to get it rebuilt ? Oh , also in the last 3 monthe or so it has revved up to full throttle and stuck momentarily , only done it 5 or 6 times in that period , have to give the go pedal a quick stab to un stick it. Does this a commonly happen when the pump is on the way out ?

yep, rebuild it before it locks at full noise on you (assuming its not just a sticky throttle cable.

anything up to $2k for a drive in drive away rebuild. More if you want a super good job done with all the extra cool bits done just perfect. (maybe worth it especially if you want to run WVO or bio)
