Overheating with AC on
I own a 97 V8 D1 and have never had any overheating issues in the 4 years I have owned it. This arvo, running back in to town, it was warming up (mid 30's) so I flicked the AC on. I noticed as soon as I turned it on the temp started to rise. I turned it off and pulled over and it immediately returned to normal. As I drove the rest of the way home it was fine, so I put the AC back on and straight away it started to heat up again. Turn it off and it goes back to normal. Also, in the last couple of weeks I have been getting a very slight squealing sound under load when the revs increase. Have thought this may be a slightly loose fan belt but get nothing when I rev the motor in neutral. It only happens under load/hard acceleration. Could this mean that the tensioning pulley is kaput and needs to be replaced? Are these issues related? As in, when the AC goes on the belt is slipping with the extra resistance and stopping the fan from working properly? I'm just letting the car cool down now before I start to investigate. The radiator has been flushed and refilled with OAT coolant only a couple of months ago so should not be a problem. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Cheers
Glen

Does it have an electric fan on the radiator,if so is it going?
The belt squeal maybe because the fan is not operating & also causing high head pressures in the ac system.
If fan is going, check direction is correct.

Cooling system is standard so the engine fan is the viscous fan.

Your cooling system is well overdue for a good clean-out if it hasn't been done, start there. It is common for the A/C to cause overheating on all types of vehicles,a hot day strains the cooling system and the extra load from the A/C push's it over the edge. Pat

Hopefully fixed the problem. Partially removed the radiator and there was a nice collection of crud caught up between the radiator and the condensor. Cleared it all out now and will take it for a run tomorrow to see if the problem is solved. BTW Pat, every day is a hot one up here. I just haven't run the AC for a few months.
