Thread: Low EGT temps?

If the probe is at 90* to egr blank plate, it is not possible to get it into the gas stream.

To just reach the edge of the gas stream requires a upward angle of about 45* to blank plate and the probe must extend approx 50mm from the underside of the blank plate.

For best measurement results the probe should extend further into the gas stream than the egr pocket.

Lugging around town should not produce very high egt. The highest egt is seen when the engine is pulling hard, foot flat to floor with maximum load (steep hill and trailer on back).

I initially adjusted the IP on my disco and tested it by the egt on steep local hills. I adjusted it to egt was less than 650*.

But first trip with the boat (not heavy - 4.3m tinnie and unbraked trailer) behind I had to watch the egt all of the way, because it went way over and I could easily reach 750* (and climbing) on even small hills when I wasn't careful.

I bent my thermocouple around a mandrel to get it bent into "the flow". Similar temps as above on highway
