    Layshaft bearings gone at best.

Well i had more on my plate then the Dust storm driving from Tenterfield to Brisbane yesterday. Got home and there was a grinding crunching noise coming from the gearbox. Went down to MR Auto for an opinion well its not what I wanted to hear, seems it never is. Layshaft bearings are shot at best. $2500.00 to $3500.00 to fix or get a recon box R380. Not only is the box broken I copped a rock thrown up by a semi shatter the front windscreen halfway home. Man sometimes I feel like throwing cash at the hungary hoards. At least I'll feel better.

Dave, if its any consolation, my R380 is stuffed too. Waiting on some hard savings to get a replacement. Probably throw in a H/D clutch while I'm on the job. Waiting for the weather to warm up 'cos its still raining and cold down here in Tassie. Any ideas what caused your meltdown? Mine developed a leak behind the pump and ran itself dry

Gotta love that R380, mine **** itself twice in a year (possible dodgy repair the first time but I couldn't prove anything).

Yep,you have to wonder about the R380,they seem to cause all sorts of trouble and everyone has an opinion, funny thing is mine has run most of it's life on ATF and has never given me an ounce of trouble even though ATF is supposed to be the worst thing for them. The way it's going it will see 500K easy. Yep. I'm doing the rebuild route at the moment. However at nearly 400thk and having only run ATF and not changed it often enough I can't really say it's the boxs' fault. Funny how you find out about these things too late.

Mine was a low level growl even in neutral which suggested gearbox bearings. Turned out to be input shaft bearing on R380 gearbox and other components in box getting too hot. Fitting tranny cooler now as part of rebuild.

As the whole tranny is out thought I'd do the TCase as well. Hope to do a thread on the complete rebuild of the R380 and the LT230T with pics along the way if anyone interested.

Talk about topical, just had mine rebuilt at around $2500 and throw in a new flywheel and clutch plus labour and there wont be much change out of $4500, bit rich after only 70000kms!!Apparently the hardcasing on the layshaft bearing came adrift and trashed the rest, great outcome, shame they dont use top quality bearings on the assembly line.
