Winch Isolators

i used a safety cut out switch from david bower in the uk.
not sure were to buy except from him, small enough to fit on the front box so can be installed near the battery and easy to reach from drivers seat.

few details here (its the heavy duty one):

VWP - battery isolator switches

500amp continuos on 12v which is perfect really as a 9.5xp peak draw is about 485amp

I also run them both through 500amp mega fuses.

Can grab you a pic if you want?

Durite in the UK are a great supplier. Not sure if available over here?

You can spot the obvious mistake I made with the Anderson socket wiring . lol Just checking to see if I can find a supplier of the mega fuses over here.

That looks like a bugger to change batteries !

A mate of mine burnt his one out, thats why I'm not too keen on the lesser rated keyed versions

And as for the story, like I said it's a story. For $50 I'd rather find out the right way

I go along with Andy on this.

It was certainly possible back when Warn used a 3 wire controller. I'm too lazy to go back and pull out the wiring diagram for the 5 wire controllers that have been used for many years now. It could be possible but will not be as simple as you implied.

In any case why install another solenoid or heavy isolator in the power circuit when you can use a smaller switch in the control circuit similar to how ScrubPleb suggested.

Every component/connection you add in the power circuit can drop your voltage and current will have to increase or winch performance suffer. There are already too many.

Safety regulations, for competition vehicles require full current isolators that can be operated from outside the vehicle. You have to be very careful with what you use for these and the only ones that perform well are expensive and not easy to source - the problem involves also isolating the alternator, which self excites when the engine is running and voltage spikes that damage the alternator and other electrics/computers.

IMHO, if you want to isolate the winch, disconnect the +ve cable from the battery, or put a switch in the control circuit.
