Winch Isolators

I disagree John,

It makes far more sense to disconnect the main power line as close as you can to the battery in my eyes. If something did go wrong and it ended up say damaging the outer sheilding of the wire, it would cause a possible dead short / fire risk. (Especially if routed say through the chassis rails)

If its isolated, it wouldnt.

The 500A Mega Fuse is hard to get, particularly at a reasonable price. The fuse holder can also be expensive.

I got mine from eBay UK from Ajay Trading - two 500A fuses and one fuse holder GBP10.00 plus GBP7.00 for delivery. If you buy two sets, (i.e four 500A fuses and two fuse holders) postage only goes up to GBP9.00

That is a different issue to what the original poster raised.

Since it is a long cable run from a defender battery to a front mounted winch there is more potential to damage the cable insulation.

I don't think there is any excuse for not protecting the cable correctly.

A fuse is the only practical thing you could expect to provide unattended protection against what you have described. Or are there suitable fusible links? Of course the cable could be disconnected at the battery terminal or an isolator at could be switched off - but we know what happened to Murphy.

With regard to Murphy, if its possible it will probably happen to me lol!

I tried to set mine up with all eventualities covered and so far its been good. I almost didnt bother with the megafuses, but in hindisght I think it was sensible.

I should have tried the theory out.

Cutting my car in half with the winch cable would have been a far better return $$$$/insurance wise then continually fixing the bl..dy thing up and then getting b.gger all when selling it :mad::mad::mad:

As John said, it is possible with the old 3-wire controller. It is probably still possible to short the 5-wire, but not with a paperclip.

Unwind the winch rope and store it at home or in the car when not in use :)

Maybe use fishing line so it will snap before the roof caves in :angel:
