    severe vibration issues

    Hi all

    I have a 97 disco tdi manual
My issue is im getting bad steering wheel wobble when i hit 70k/hr. It's as if im missing a wheel nut on each front wheel which im not. I get the same problem when decelerating. The car has had a lift a few inches. I have also noticed that it worse when the wheels are pointing left, when they are pointing right it's not so bad....yet

My next issue is when braking above 60k/hr. When i put my foot on the brake im getting bad vibration in the steering wheel.

It seems to be getting worse and has only set in, in the last month or 2.

Has anyone had this issue or any ideas what the remedy might be? There are no obvious parts missing underneath, tyre pressure is good.

    Thanks

yes I still have this issue....except mine is at 100..

actually got rid of it for a couple of months but since losing a wheel weight and having my tyres rebalanced its all back again.

    giving me the iritts....

    • Check wheel balance
    • check swivel preload
    • check wheel bearings
    • check panhard bushes
    • check tyres for bulges etc and check tyre pressure while your there
    • check steering damper
    • possibly check steering rack for wear.
    • check propshafts

thats all I can think of right now......and everything I have done on mine so far.
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

All of the above from DB, and check that the nut at the bottom of the steering box is tight and the retaining washer is doing its job, check that the bracket holding the panhard rod to the chassis is secure. (Also braces the steering box) These are easy checks to do early to save time and bucks.

Both have been known to come loose.

    cheers, DL

first thing i always check for with these symptons is panhard bushes, most of the time these are only slightly worn or bolts are slightly loose, thats all it takes

I have had exactly the same problem, on a Disco SII with 1,5" lift, and both sway-bar removed. Now I have the front sway-bar re-installed, and the vibration is very very small (this is not the solution), and acts as a temporally fix until I found where the problem come from.
I suspect the problem has appeared after the lift, and I am waiting for a real solution. If I do not found the real fix, the next step is to return the Disco at standard height with Heavy Duty coils, and no more problems.

I have read about this "severe vibration at 'x' speed" problem on the UK landy forums, the general consensus was that it was a worn out or damaged steering damper most of the time.

Thanks for the replies guys. Im gonna have a play this weekend .

I should have mentioned the fact that i have a heavy steering wheel to, and i can hear the power steering making a noise under the bonnet when i move the wheel. Fluid is at the correct level.

I did an inspection of the steering system under the bonnet. The first thing that the steering arm meets down by the radiator is producing a bit of a mess, and leaking all over the suspension directly underneath it. Im not sure what this part is called but i think it might be the problem. What do you guys thinks???

Im gonna jack it up this weekend and check the suspension and bearings. There is alot of oil or fluid on the front right suspension, the left side is very clean.
