Electrical fitting top of dash D2 Td5?

I have a 2000 D2 Td5 and on the top of the dash in the centre very close to the windscreen there is a round fitting with what appears to be electrical components inside.....it has a little screw on cap covering it and sits up slightly from the dash itself. Very small, about 20mm across. There are no wires etc connected above the dash (maybe some connected below but I can't see it from underneath). Obviously a standard fitting as the dash mat has allowances for it.
Can anybody tell me what it is and what it's for please?

    Cheers
    Mick

    Dont quote me on this.

I read about this some years back in the RAVE cd

    It is s UV/light sensor.

Its to do with the climate control ( I think ) in your vehicle.

I am sure other more knowledgable folk coudl enlightne you futher

    G'day Mick,
It's a sun light sensor, I beleive it's an input for the climate control.

    Cheers, Kyle.

Thanks guys....bit strange though because the cap appeared to be solid and opaque and the fitting has been covered with a dash mat for a couple of years or more. Doesn't seem to have had any effect on the climate control though, that still works very well. (I've probably put the mockas on it now after raising the issue)

    Cheers

The RAVE CD refers to it as "Sensor - solar light"

I have no idea what it does tho?

The workshop manual says this,Sunlight sensor consists of two diodes that provide the ATC ECU with inputs of light intensity, one is sensed coming from the left & one from the right of the vehicle. The inputs are used as a measure of the solar heating effect on vehicle occupants.
The measured solar heating effect is used to adjust cooling parrameters ,when air distribution is set to face or face & footwell,in AUTO setting of A/C.It is also used to increase of decrease blower speeds in the AUTO setting.

The A/C system in the D2 is extremely complicated, but seems to work very well,& be very reliable

    Hope the above helps
