That is the Best thing , fitting an autobox to a Tdi Defender,( using the Defender transfer case though), it is a good and relatively easy conversion. Made better with a VNT turbo kit and bigger intercooler would be a fantastic set up

As JC says - motor etc is the same as the Discovery. (300Tdi - 200Tdi they are a bit different). Makes the auto conversion relatively easy.

manual back to auto is easy enough especially if you have a complete donor vehicle with the same donk as the recipient to pull the box and donk from. IE if a tdi300 disco and a tdi300 deefer.

some minor stuff will need custom fabrication but none of it is show stoppingly difficult.

does the disco auto radiator have an oil cooler, and any word on upgrading intercooler in the same position and tweaking fuel pump?? how much more power? If i put an auto into a 130 i think a few more ponies will be needed.

I've done a 110, and it is very straightforward, infact the worse bit was making the shifter and console mods look neat

The oil cooler is very important, on the 110 we fitted the toilet brush type from a RRC and early D1 in front of the grille at the bottom, just above the bull bar channel. It is quite well protected and cools very well. On another 130 I have worked on, the cooler was originally placed behind the grille, behind the winch and it caused a trans failure from overheating. I fitted a bigger cooler further up into the airflow and moved the grille forward slightly to make it fit. It is fine for cooling now.

The overall lengths are identical, no need to move mounts or shafts or anything, they go well with the defender gearing BUT have trouble in headwinds etc as the trans sucks a little bit more from the engine than a manual. A turbo and intercooler upgrade is a good thing for a 130, especially if loaded or towing.

In my opinion this should be a factory option, makes them even better offroad too in most cases.
