There is a list around here somewhere that details parts interchangeable between D1/D2/Defender. From memory the D1 and defender radiator/intercooler are the same but different surround/mounting.

As DB said, the D1 has a trans cooler, and a recommended mod is to upgrade to a P38A cooler if doing a lot of towing. A trans specialist I spoke to recently suggested the bigger cooler was only required for towing if you are running a standard trans. If you have the 3rd gear lockup mod he didn't reckon it was necessary.

It sounds like a straight forward change over, this makes me think why is there not more conversions? considering r380 cause grief with mainshaft?

If your going to do it,go all the way and fit a better turbo, bigger intercooler and trans cooler.I would also fit a disco rad with Falcon thermo's,that's worth 12 HP and pull the head and port and polish, around $2-$300 bucks with new gasket and replaced the bigends, easier than you think. With the turbo look at just getting Garrett to replace the internals when they rebuild it with a modern high flow compressor, around $600 and it would be a very strong engine.I'm tossing up weather to do the same or buy a Puma.I do want an auto. Pat,
that sounds a little like pre-emptively pulling the head

Do you have more info on the "modern high flow compressor for $600" from Garrett.
Where do I send my spare snail to be rebuilt and made betterer!

Pulling the head and replacing bigends will fix the two,how do I say ''weak'' area's of the Tdi.Headwork makes a big difference to how an engine producess power and with a higher flow compressor and exhaust lets more fuel/air in,more exhaust out and more ponies at the wheels.Give garrett a ring, they can do lots of tricky stuff to older lower spec turbo's for very reasonable money. so what sort of power and torque figures can i expect to get out of a 300tdi with auto with small tweaks, still got to be reliable

Tdi Disco rad and Defender Tdi rads are virtually identical, as are the intercoolers and will interchange into their bracketry etc and visa versa. The Disco Tdi trans oil cooler isn't as efficient IMHO as the RRC toilet brush type, but very close.
Niether have a cooler in the radiator apart from engine oil cooler element.

Better than any of the engines from that period such as 1HZ,4.2TD Patrol. It would come close to the tojo 4.2TD but with a lighter body and better gearbox it would go well, reliability wise it would depend on how you treated it.All up it would be a good thing. Pat
