Unhappy Front propshaft carked it, can I leave it out?

    Howdy all

Sad news I'm afraid . I've been trying to track down a mysterious clunk and vibration in my series 1 Disco 98 tdi. After checking all of the wheel bearings and then taking it to our local Landy man and him pointing out my belt tensioner is getting a bit how you going (when will the wallet pain stop ) the noise is still there.

Got under it just now and found the diff end uni of the front propshaft about to let go . Just think what that would have done to my nicely rebuilt auto and the bellhousing and the engine sump and the.........

So, out with the old propshaft.

My question now to the mechanically minded, can I leave it out and continue to drive and commute with the gold bus or should I leave it off the road till a suitable replacement can be found? We were/are going camping with the tin lids tomorrow arvo and I'd still like to go (pulling a camper trailer with the Disco to a local campground 30ks away).

What say ye all, can I drive it safely with the front propshaft out???

    Cheers

you can but its strictly a get you home measure in my books, a stuffed Uj shouldnt take more than an hour to sort if you have a jack the spanners and a parking place out the front of the hardy spicers you called the day before you left.

    As above.

I took mine out when my CDL would not unlock after camping.

The gears/drive train will feel really sloppy so be very gentle....

    Thanks guys

    Matt

Gears very sloppy?? Mine is an auto, is yours a manual and the shifts were a bit vague, is that what you mean?? I couldn't see how dropping a shaft out would make the gearbox respond any differently? But I'm more than happy to stand corrected.

Blknight, can the stuffed uj's be replaced on these propshafts? Save me looking for a complete propshaft end to end.

    Regards

With the cdl locked in you can drive without the front propshaft but my experience when this happened to me is that it will affect the handling - not dangerous or anything but you know something is different about it, so take it easy.

Whether it is wise to pull a camper trailer without the front shaft is another matter. I'll leave that for others to comment on.

as said - lock your centre diff and you can drive on one drive shaft. The steering becomes vague with the front drive shaft missing and I wouldn't go towing the camper with it out.

A new uni joint is not that hard to fit, just dont go losing the roller bearings in the new one.

In my experience backlash is reduced with one driveshaft out.

Yeah not really the gear box, more the drive train/remaining prop shafts, I'm not that mechanically minded. Lots of clunks somewhere there. Not sure how delicate an auto would be. I found when I used the clutch a lot more it made it smoother and less clunky.... ergo not sure about the auto.

they most certainly can be replaced,

the better your workshop the easier it is but Ive replaced more than a couple of handfulls of them on the side of the road with little more than a socket set, a hammer, a pair of needle nose pliers and the barwork of the landy.

Theres a knack to doing it but if your confident enough to remove and replace the shaft by yourself then its certainly within you're capabilities.

a decent vice and a good block of wood will make life easier but they're not essential.

Thanks heaps guys, just moved the Disco out of the shed and found that (as someone already pointed out) I needed to lock the centre diff into high range to get the rear drive working, makes sense now that I think of it.....

I'll be on the phone tomorrow to try and sort out a replacement uj, as the rest of the shaft looks fine and the splines are in pretty good nick (it came apart when I was removing it from the car, woops). Both parts are marked so the two go back together the same way. What I did forget to do was mark the uj's to the flanges. Is this going to affect the balance of the shaft??

    not significantly no.

Part of the reason I made mention of doing the shaft in the carpark of a place like hardy spicer is because for not much more than the cost of the 2 UJ's they will fit them and balance the shaft. which is always a good thing for the front propshaft.
