Most likely water vapor, not smoke.
Then the cold air from the air con hits warm humid air in the car the water in the warm air condenses out as cloud.
If it were smoke you would smell it.

    SMOKE

Did it smell like smoke ?? I have travelled in a Car in Thailand and it was like being in a blizzard in the car as it was humid outside and cold inside there were ice particals being thrown out the AC vents. Saying that how about running just the interior fan with no AC and see if it happens again. could be a fan motor. Hope its just moisture though.

Err... as TonyC has said, it is most likely water vapour due to very dry air coming from the vents, hitting humid air in the cabin.

It is a pretty rare occurrence that conditions are such that it happens, hence why you've never seen it before.

So... to fix, and not see again, there are a few options...
    1) Don't use the air con
    2) Close your eyes

I've seen it maybe 3 times ever. It is normal. You can't help that conditions were such that it happened. It most likely won't happen again for a long long time.

    No smell? Not smoke!

I am with the others on this. Vapour and very rare.

At least you know the thing is drying the air and working.

I had that happen on a falcon, it was a release of refrigerant due to over pressurising in the system, something had to give to release it, I needed to have it topped up with refrigerant when it was checked as some of the refrig escaped .

I am no expert but have experienced this in a BMW in Malaysia.

The answer was that the thermostat was cutting out at too low a temp and the evaporator core was freezing.

So maybe you should have an aircon expert check the thermostat.
