    TDi versus TD5

I'm looking at buying my first Disco, I was thinking of somethng around 2000 -2002 TD5 but I'm told the TDi is more reliable, cheaper to repair and easier to work on. What is the consensus from the members?
    Cheers,

I don't think this subject has ever been brought up.

Far as I know the TD5's had a few probs.. IMO I'd go a V8

    Hey Rosey.

The saerch will reveal a lot of info, and thats probably the place to start before it turns into a row. (which it will, especially if you just want engine info- which is only a part of it really)

There are a lot of differences, between D1 and D2's

Ive owned a Tdi and now own a Td5 i never had any dramas with the Tdi and have had a trouble free run out of the Td5
In my opinion the Td5 has a heap more power than the Tdi
The Td5 has more electricals to depend on what motor doesnt these days , the Tdi is a old fashioned design engine except for the rubber timing belt
I like my Td5 , some here live in the past and love their Tdi,s but some of us also love the old Rangies & Series & Disco,s so its a personal opinion that only you can decide

I agree,I really like my Tdi but the 3.0TD in the RR is just so much better in every way.A lot of people live in the past but new engines just leave the old ones behind. If the budget allows go a sorted Td5. Pat

    Pat303,

I was looking at around 10K for starters but might have to go a bit north for a good one.

10K will get you a good Tdi with lots of extras (bullbar etc), but won't be enough for a Td5! (or at least a good one anyway)

The last of the Disco Tdi's was 1998, then Td5 in 1999.

    nutshell

the tdi can be tweaked up to the same performance as the stock td5, but then you can chip the td5 to some pretty insane levels of power for a small diesel.

the tdi is cheaper and easier to repair but doesnt quite get the economy of the td5 and looked after the td5 should outlast the tdi and the major service items like the cam belt arent a requirement on the td5. Because its electronic the td5 can be easier to diagnose (plug in a computer) but more costly to repair.

the tdi's are starting to be difficult to get some parts for.

the Tdi is more tolerant of bad fuel than the td5

There are a LOT of other differences between the vehicles that carry the 2 different engines that just that TC/ABS/the aircons, the stereo, the layouts all the comfort items.

if you are only looking at the $10-15K market my advice is go tdi you're not going to get much of a td5 in that bracket
