There are several styles but the common one used on most passenger vehicle applications are a stadard size. They do come in a myriad of threads and lengths though.

I've got one of these and they are great. For something that you should be using quite regularly they are well worth the extra money over a Supercheap version. Only cost around $100.

Another Macnaught product that is good is the 'Suction gun hand operated'

About $55. I always dreaded changing gearbox/diff/transfer oil before I bought one of these.

    Another possibility

Possible the nipples are blocked no grease gets through and the pressure that builds up between the grease gun and the nipple can be immense, locking the jaws on the gun. This used to happen a lot on excavators and earth moving gear.

Remove the hose from the grease gun and then try to remove it from the nipple? This should reduce the pressure and allow the release of the jaws on the gun.

Try taking the nipple off and give a few pumps to see if grease comes through, put it back on and try again.

Sometimes the area you are trying to put grease into is packed solid with a mixture of old grease, dust & other crap and will not allow any more in, needs pulling apart and a good clean. Very dry and dusty or mudy or a long time between application of the grease gun can contribute!

If the nipple lets the grease through not attatched to the vehicle but refuses when on the the vehicle might be an indication something not quite right inside whatever your trying to grease.

This used to happen a lot on the excavators and usually required a bit of a pull a part, clean and reassemble and always threw in a new nipple.

    Process of elimination.

I have one of those and it is the biggest waste of money out - the plunger does not seal on the body and oil leaks everywhere.

    Really?
How long have you had it?
I'd be returning it if you can. Mine is not quite 1 year old I think but has been used a bit and still seals perfectly. In fact the suction is so strong that I find I need to do a slight back and forth twist on the handle as I draw the oil in to make it easier on myself.

Being MacNaught I assume you can rebuild them but the kit would want to be cheap given a new one is $55. It is probably only one or two rubber seals.
