Sounds like a slipping chain in the BW transfer case. This happens eventually to them all.

Got a nasty noise in the driveline comes in when you apply moderate accell pedal ie from a standing start. If you drive very very sedately it doesn't happen.
Very loud steel/steel clanging/clattering noise sort of sounds like 2 metal parts are momentarily catching then freeing up. Thought it was the rear maxilocker so took out rear tailshaft before driving it to a friends workshop However that didn't change anything. So could it be the transfer box (93 Vogue) or front diff or something else entirely.
Apparantly when it started car was in reverse on full lock with small trailer attached.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for that Phillip A Does that mean replacement parts or does the chain have a tensioner. I assume as I could drive it , the viscous side of the box is ok
It means new parts and AFAIK a new chain is minimum $700. There is no tensioner.
The viscous does not usually fail like that. They usually sieze as the fluid dries up over time and the car makes a hell of a noise of screeching on concrete floors when you turn as the car is in locked 4WD.

with someone outside watching the shafts conduct a stall test. with your foot on the brake only and with the handbrake off
if it makes the noise and none of the shafts are turning its the TC or the trans. If one of the shafts turn then its either diff or spline related.

Thanks for the replies I'm heading out to the workshop tomorrow,I'll try the stall test. Am I right in thinking if one of the shafts turns that is the bad end of the car?
correct. as you had the problem with the rear shaft disconnected that elminates the rear drive line as being the cause.
if it sounded like it was coming from the rear when it happened without the rear shaft in then its most likely the tcase or box.
A confirmatory test (or the first one if you dont want to abuse the box) is to drain the tcase oil and check it (and the magnetic drain plug if you still have it fitted) for nasties.

For less than the cost of a new chain you can swap to an LT230 T-case. Trav (Aquarangie) has done it if you need pointers.
