    Limp when hot !

    Hi,

    This is a bit embarrassing.

When the temperature hits 30+ the rear view mirror goes all limp and won't stay up. I do have another mirror (much wider and bigger) fitted on top of it so it has a bit more weight than normal.

However I had the same thing for 10 years on my old V8 Disco and had no probs. I know my Tdi may not have the manly roar of the V8 but surely I don't need to lubricate a 16 year old with little blue pills already.

Seriously does anyone have any ideas ?

    Thanks

    Regards

What model Tdi do have? D1 or Defender?

The early update D1s had a mirror that was quite easily pulled apart. Then you could coat the ball with a smear of glue or similar to make it tighter (let the glue dry before assembling otherwise you won't be able to adjust it).
I haven't pulled any other mirrors apart so this may not be any good to you.

Thanks Scott, it is a Discovery 1 early model so I'll try pulling the mirror apart this weekend.

    Appreciated.

Pull the dipping tab out, then the mirror head will come off. Make sure you catch the spring too .

Thanks Scouse. Came apart real easy. Tried fixing it with araldite, as bad as ever when hot which surprised me.

I thn took off the large oversized mirror I had fitted over the bog standarsd one thinking that was the issue. Still limp and useless when hot. So I pulled it apart again and loads of superglue later it's rock solid in any temp. very happy chappy. Strange how much you miss it when it's not useable.

I was pretty lucky getting it back together as I have it in the optimal position and there was no wriggle time or movement after joining the parts, it locked solid almost immediately. Anyone else trying it beware of that.

Give the spring a stretch so that it puts more pressure on the ball.
