I am guessing here that you left the ignition on to keep pressure to the injector.
I am not up to speed yet on EFI diesels as I don't yet own one but I would assume it is similar to a petrol EFI (As far as fuel delivery is concerned)
On an EFI petrol, when the ignition is turned on the fuel pump only operates for a few seconds until the engine starts. If the engine is not started the fuel pump shuts down.
Now I don't know if diesels do this but would be worth checking before relying on the results of your test.
