I had the same noise. Thought the turbo was suspect. But when I changed the centrifugal oil filter the noise was gone.
Some aftermarket ones have a slightly smaller brass bush and this allows the filter to contact the housing as the oil pressure drops.
It will dissapear with a change of filter.

    Dave,
This is a D1. They don't have a centrifugal filter.

I have three options and would like your advice.

Option One, I was quoted $700 to $1500(What this means is $1500) to have it reconditioned if I remove from car.

Two, Second hand. I haven't looked or priced yet. Any one know of any and how much. I am only planning to keep this vehicle for about two more years. Is SH worth the risk

Three. Island 4X4 have them new for 420 pound. I did a conversion to A$ and it was $761. Does anyone here have any idea what this would cost to freight to Au? Are there any other hidden cost when importing?

I do have a Nephew living in the mother country. Would it be any cheaper to get him to buy it and post it?

Any help here would be much appreciated.

    Dave.
Probably not, VAT will apply to your nephew. May be able to get it back but it will be simpler to have the dealer not charge it in the first place.

Under $1000 including shipping costs should be fine, after that you run into duties.

    The 300tdi turbos are T2/T25.
IMO $700-1500 for a rebuild is BS. A rebuild kit is under $100 and it's about two hours labour to fit.
If the core is worn out of spec (rare unless the turbo has been completely lunched) then you're better to buy a new core than pay for a new turbine shaft, housing machining and oversize bushings.

Have you asked a garrett dealer for a price on a brand new core? It's probably less than the rebuild quoted above.
Regarding second-hand. Go for it. The most you can lose is the labour to fit. As long as the shaft play is minimal, no visible leaks and blades are in good condition you're okay.

Can anyone recommend some one in Melb who can listen to it for a prognosis. There aren't any turbo specialists in Shepparton.

Bendigo is closer so that would be better.

I pulled the hoses off the snail on christmas eve. There is a bit of play in the turbine shaft. Having not needed the vehicle for the past week it has been sitting doing nothing. I decided to put it back together today so I can drive it to a specialist.

As the rubber hoses were looking a little sad I thought I would change them. Much to my delight I found the short hose that comes from the bottom of the intercooler had a small split in the bottom of it, which could not be seen from above.

I suspect this could be the noise I am hearing. New hoses have been ordered and I shall post results after they arrive.
