    300 Tdi Discovery Alternators

    Gday

Well I'm in search of an alternator for the Defender

I went down to the local dealer today (I know I vowed I never would but this time it may have paid off)

Apparently there are 3 different types of alternators on the Discos.

One from the early models to about 1995 - $1881.25

    One from 1995 - 1997 - $827.05

    and the last 1997 - 1999 - $300.30

Now what I'd like to know is whats the difference between these three?

And will it matter if I fit the cheapest one to me 1995 300 Tdi Defender?

The spare parts fella said they were all 100A

    Thanks

    Jock,

Really need part numbers to tell you more, BUT the early ones were mostlikely still 200Tdi, the 300Tdi ran 2 alternators, bigger pulley diameter on the early one prior to 1997, and went from 'Magnetti Marelli' to 'Lucas Marelli'

IMHO there is no justification for those prices

I purchased a new MM alt. from British 4wd imports 03 9728 8046 for my 94 Disco (serp. belt) 105 amp for around $330 delivered in a few days, Regards Frank.

JC, you may be able to help, the MM alt. I purchased recently came with a 3mm thick plastic (bakelite type material) cover that bolts to the 3 through bolts on the back leaving a space between it and the back of the alt., it has a cutout on one side for the cables.
It was'nt bolted on when it arrived, though the nuts, and washers were on the through bolts.
My question is should this plate be fitted, I was worried that the air flow through the alt. would be restricted, even though there is an ample air gap.
Could it be a heat shield from the turbo, I've heard that heat from the turbo can damage or dry out the rear bearing (alt.), would be interested to hear your opinion, Thanks, Regards Frank.

Frank......fit the plate as it acts as a heat shield.
The back of the altenator is close to the exhaust manifold.
british 4 wd imports usually has good pricing on defender parts.
I have been buying from them for years.
Ashdowns also do a altenator for a similar price too.

Thanks JC, have to love dealer prices can you see why I have such a high impression of them

If it's a different size pulley am I right to just rattle the pulley off and switch them over? or would this affect the alternator

    YLE10113 - $1800

    AMR4248 - $800

    AMR5425 - $300

I'll send British 4WD Imports an email, thanks

Well it seems the cheapest alternator I can find is from the dealer

    Shock horror

But before I go and spend the money, is there any reason why an alternator to suit a 1997-1999 Discovery won't work on my 1995 Defender?

The one from the dealer is the same price as an aftermarket from a private spare parts place

Have you considered importing from UK.

They are quoting about 90 to 108 pound.

I was going to import one from the UK, frieght cost was around $160 AUD, alternator was $186, cheaper to buy here for my model (94 Disco 300TDi), Regards Frank.
