    Series 3 Electrical Problem

My 1973 Series 3 low beam headlights come on when the ignition is switched on, and go out only when the ignition is switched off. This even happens when the fuze is removed and/or the correct leads are removed from the headight switch.

With the ignition on, when high beam is selected on the dipper switch, high beam comes on, but low beam also stays on. All wiring appears to be correct, and I cannot find a (non-standard) relay anywhere in the headlight circuit.

Over to you - what is the cause?!!

SOUND LIKE A RELAY PROBLEM TO ME

Did you try pulling the relay for the lights out while the lights are on It sounds very much like the points in the relay are sticking closed.

They dont have a relay(as stanard),full power runs thru the hi/lo switch.
    Are your indicators behaving correctly???
I think the issue will be in the hi/lo headlight and indicator switch, power is somehow crossing over from the indicators to the lights.
You should be able to get a new one for less than $100.
Another thought, does your landy have spotties???If so check the spotty relay,if its stuffed and wired incorrectly it COULD be feeding power back into the headlight circuit thru the ignition.
Once sorted it would be well worth buying one of Traxidetronics (Drivesafe on here) DIY relay kits. The Light circuit is only then used as a trigger for relays to draw direct from the battery,VERY EASY TO FIT!!!!!
    GOODLUCK

    Hodgo,

My circuit diagram doesn't show a relay, and I did not eyeball one. If there is a relay, where should it be?

    Andrew,

All other elec stuff works perfectly, no spotties!

All fixed, it was the ignition switch.

I had diagnosed the switch as the cause, but wasn't enitrely sure. It was confirmed when I came home at night with the headlights on, switched the ignition off and the engine kept running. Switched the lights off, and the engine stopped. Yep, it is definately a Land Rover!!

That sounds like a handy feature - you'd never leave your lights on
