    D2 more grunt

Done a bit of searching through the archives but still need to ask the question: I'm on the lookout for a nice D2 td5 and could do with a bit more grunt to tow 1900/2000kg (loaded) van and family of 4. Having seen the chip upgrades:

Graeme Cooper - Land Rover TD5 Diesel engine performance data

    or intercooler/exhaust:

    Davis Performance Upgrades

I am a bit in the dark as to which would be the better way to go

Graeme Cooper give a price of $795 for the chip and I presume there isn't a lot of labour in that but I have no idea what Davis would charge for the other option. Cost apart, which would be the best option, particularly with towing in mind? The Bruce Davis 520Nms look mighty impressive.

I have a D2 TD5 manual, with the Davis chip, goes very well.
I improved it further by fitting a unifilter, opening up the air box, removing the egr valve, and fitting a F100 free flowing muffler, and larger dia rear resinator. My only gripe is the manual is still tough to get of the line, but once going, goes very well. Fully loaded family 2 Adult, 3 kids, under 14, loaded with usuall hilday crap, up the hume on the speed limit, I get about 10l/100. giving it the boot on the way to work on hilly conutry rds, I get 12.5, but that perhaps driving above the limit, and punching up hills.

I never did get to fitting biiger back of turbo conversion, or bigget intercooler, cause, I don't think it really needs it.

that all sounds a bit pricey mate - can you give us some indication of cost?

I'm expecting to pay in the upper $20,000s for a nice lowish mileage fsh job but if I'm going to be spending getting toward the mid-30s including power upgrades I might be better looking for a D3 in the upper 30s.......which brings me to another question: the D3 is 300kg heavier than the D2, which you'd think would use up a fair bit of the more powerful motor. Is the D3 much better towing?

    Is it an auto?

the auto ecu will only let 140kw and 380nm before going into limp mode.

I think tombie2 (total rover tech) is the best man for ecu remaps. his prices are very good and I think he does special deals for AULRO members.

I use an ASE I/c on mine http://www.aseturbo.com/html/4wd_per...cessories.html (TRT had a hand in the development).

There are many thread regarding I/c, ASE use a superior core

thanks Benny - I was wanting an auto

Brisbane's a bit of a stretch for me as I'm in between Newcastle and Sydney but I do sometimes get up there

I'll probably give Bruce Davis a call and see about the intercooler/exhaust option but it looks a bit pricey. Still, if it does the job (520Nms looks mighty impressive) and I've not spent the kids' piggy bank money on the car, you never know

you wont get 520 nm out of an auto D2. the auto ecu wont allow it. as benny said 380nm is the limit.
ive now re chipped a few B davis td5's and the owners say the same thing, the tombie upgrade is way more drivable.
pm me for details and price. the tombie upgrade is cheaper than BD and coopers.

    cheers phil
