    R380 endfloat... what's the go???

    Hi to all you knowledgable ones out there in the electronic eather. Can anyone enlighten me on this issue. I'm rebuilding my R380 box and the RAVE manual says to have endfloat on the shafts... but they're taper rollers and of anything that I know about bearings is that tapers need preload, not endfloat. My Gearbox Guru friend (vast experience with exotic and prestige) insists RAVE is wrong...!!! Thoughts and suggestions most welcome.

    You're not the first to discover that the LR engineers do things differently - if you really want the tech side of things, PM member 'Ashtrans', who apparently is on first name terms with the UK firm Ashcroft Transmissions. They are probably the leader in rebuilding R380's.

    A tip from Award Diffs - pay attention to the oil pump assembly - you don't necessarily need to strip it down completely. The right gasket is hard to source, and it seems that the tolerances are thrown out after a new one is installed.

    A tip from me - if you find that at the end you have installed the collar on the output shaft and forgot the oil seal, an appropriately sized speedi sleeve will allow installation. Any other method damages the seal and it will leak.

    I can't say whether or not the Rave is correct what I do know is that not all tapered bearing applications have preload.

    Front wheel bearings on most rear wheel drive vehicles don't have preload.

    I have rebuilt a lot of five speed Ford and Commodore gear boxes and from memory they have a zero to five thousand of an inch end float on the cluster gear.

    If your gear box has tapered on the cluster gear and also on the input/output shaft, if you had preload on both you would have trouble selecting gears.

    Hi Les,
    I have just had a look at Rave. It says zero to two thou end float on both.

    I would take this as correct. I would aim for zero on the input/output and one thou on the cluster gear.

    It would not hurt if you even had one thou preload on input/output so long as you had end endfloat on the cluster.

    Thanks guys for your replies, has been very helpful. Awaiting a further reply from Ashcrofts as per langy's suggestion, but will probably go as you advised Mark for zero on the main and 1 thou on the cluster. Ta guys.

    set it up at 0/0 and be sure to use a "thin" oil in it.
