    3.9 RRC water pump?

    Hi,

I'm doing a cooling system overhaul on my 3.9L V8 RRC very soon, what brand water pump should I look out for/ steer clear of? Should I go genuine?

    I'm getting the radiator rodded.

    The hoses look good still.

Is it worth doing the thermostat while I'm there?

I know those alloy engines have probs if incorrect coolant is used. Is the Nulon Long Life Concentrate coolant fine to use at a 50% mixture?

How often should it be changed/ flushed to prevent cooling probs, like head gaskets blowing, cracked blocks etc?

I bought a replica one from UK a couple of years ago and fitted it recently and it seems OK.
I think if you stick to LRdirect or similar they give you a choice, but I think pattern ones are OK.
I would change the hoses if they are over 5 years old, and yes change the thermostat, heck they are under 20 bucks.
I use Nulon Long life at 50% in DISTILLED WATER and change about every 3 or 4 years.
My core is now 10+years old so I must be doing something right.

LOL Nothing will stop slipped liners etc if the thing overheats so if you have the original core have it rodded while doing the overhaul, as a blocked radiator more than anything will cause overheating and engine problems.

So if you start off with a clean rad , with 50/50 Longlife and distilled water, change it every 3-4 years it should last 10 years without problems.
But the head gaskets probably won't.

Thanks Philip, I have only had the RRC 4 months so I have no idea of the history.

Is there a number of KMs that the head gaskets will do before blowing? Or just a luck kinda thing?

I live in NZ, is it necessary to use distilled water?

Well I know the water in NZ is actually the pure urine of vestal virgins but even so they may also pass a few minerals like calcium carbonate .

SO YES OF COURSE YOU SHOULD USE DISTILLED WATER.

I met a guy in Millstream National Park with an 80 series with a 1 year old OEM Toyota radiator which had sprung a leak in the core. I bet the dealer had used tap water .

With regard to head gaskets its just the luck of the draw. My first lasted 100KK when it started to leak externally and now at 190KK it is leaking externally again. So for many 100KK seems minimum. And of course if they are EVER overheated then its bye bye gasket and maybe liners.

    Regards Philip A
