    3.5 V8 Viscous Coupling

    Since I have had my 101 I thought the viscous coupling was seized and just spun the fan - however this week I have had cause to look at things more closely and there is no viscous coupling. The fan is just bolted to a hub on the end of water pump - just like in older landies.

    The fan is not overly noisy - so is there really any reason why I should change it back to a viscous coupling, particularly given their high cost - or even switch to thermo fans.

    IMHO not really as both viscous fans and electric ones main functions are to reduce noise and fuel consumption.
    You may find a viscous shifts more air at low revs as the pitch etc is greater but knowing 101 s were for the army, I would be surprised if the fan was not fit for the hardest low range work.
    BUT if you are happy leave sleeping dogs lie.

    as stated minor improvements in fuel economy and noise..

    neither of which was the strong suit of the 101 to start with.

    The 101 always had a viscous coupling and it looks as if a previous owner ha just unbolted the viscous fan from the coupling and bolted the fan to a fixed hub.

    Might just leave it as it is if there are no real advantages in changing as the tyres and exhaust make more noise.
