    Sick tdi

Hi all I am trying to help a guy at work with a bit of a diagnosis on his sick/dead tdi.
Apparentlly over a period of a week it started running rough until the turbo spooled up and then ran ok. Blowing some white with slight bluish tinge smoke. Did this for a week and then would not start at all.
Has not used any oil or coolant at this point.
    Any ideas??
I have advised him to check he is getting fuel to the engine as task 1. He did say he had part of a fule hose rub through and replaced it with a plastic type, could this deteriorate and cause a blockage?
He was thinking rings, but surely it would still run and just burn oil.
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.
    Cheers

check the usual suspects first... air and fuel!

Symptoms could be a delaminating turbo / intercooler hose??? 90degree one is always a suspect. When on boost hose can be okay, but as manifold pressure drops the inner lumen collapses and restricts air. Could pull the hose at the inlet manifold (keep small items away) and see if it runs?

check that fuel is getting to the IP and then a roughy test that each pot is getting a dose by cracking injector union.

if that all checks out a compression test would be a good next step?

White smoke is unburnt fuel - common at start up with cold engine, otherwise indicates low compression or air problem.

    Blue smoke is burning oil.

    Black smoke is incomplete combustion.

    Low power could be:

Blockages in fuel system - sedimentor, fuel filter, lines.

Faulty lift pump - diaphragm, fittings, valves.

    Air leaking into fuel lines.

Line from turbo compressor to wastegate and also to boost compensator on fuel injection pump.

Inlet and exhaust valves in head - tappet clearance, broken cups on top of valve stems.

Head gasket - not all blown gaskets are into water passages, some just blow out from the rear or side of the head.

Craig, quite possibly a timing issue, when did it have a timing belt etc done last?
Is the harmonic balancer bolt loose?

The lift pump as suggested is quite a common issue.
Check by fitting 12v petrol low pressure fuel pump in its place.

I had similar symptoms after my Tdi digested the tip of a glow plug. May be worth checking
