    Electronic Boost Gauge setup

    I have a Madman unit and as an afterthought I also purchased a VDO electronic boost guage sender unit that is matched to it. This has been on the shelf for some time and I need a project for Tuesday

    I have searched the forum and other forums around the place and there is some debate on where to pick up the boost pressure. Some say to insert a 'T' piece between the hose that goes between the wastgate modulator and the post turbo/pre intercooler hose. Others say that it should go on the post intercooler/inlet manifold side.

    The problem with the boost sender unit is that it has a 10mm 1.25 thread so if I was to install on the turbo side with a 'T' piece I have to step up the rubber hose diameter to suit and have it swinging in the breeze. Looks messy to me and not really my prefered way to do things.

    If it has to go on the inlet manifold side the only place I can think it it can go is in the aftermarket EGR tube. I think I would need a brass insert that I would have to brazen into the tube and then screw in the sender unit as I don't think the tube wall would be thick enough.

    I've never played with boost/turbo's, ect so this is a learning curve.

    What would be the best position? Sooner rather than later there will be a larger intercooler & booster box install so I need to know the best spot for the sender unit.

    If you were going to measure pressure at the inlet manifold, the 300 has a casting plug that you should be able to drill and tap (M10) at the rear passenger corner of manifold. From memory that corner is tight on a disco so would need to check for ckearance of pressure sender.

    If you were going to measure in the pressure line between turbo and IP diaphragm, at the turbo there is a threaded 3 way junction, you may be able to work some poke-jiggery with that connector to adapt out to a VDO M10 X 1.25 T-piece?

    Would be interested to know how you go as I too have an EMS and am keen on measuring boost?

    Is one position more advantageous than the other or is everyone taking the easy option of 'T' piece rubber as opposed to drill & tap steel?

    According to Madmans, you can use the position that the oil pressure sender is in, then change the setting in the EMS1 to suit.

    Because of pressure drop through the pipework and intercooler, it is of more interest to know the pressure at the inlet manifold.

    Where does a stock TD5 measure manifold pressure? I assume they do for the engine ecu, perhaps you can tee in there.

    But metric fittings (bushings, tees etc.) are more difficult to source compared to BSP or NPT.

    Installed but......

    Well, I ended up taking the hard route and installed the sender unit in the EGR bypass tube. Easy job really and looks good.

    Now for some boost readings......10psi

    mmmmmm....something wrong here. So I bypassed the wastegate modulator.....11psi and she's hopping, bucking and obviously in overboost

    Time for the Nanocom to compare....

    Interesting timing!

    My engines being disassembled at the moment...

    So I drilled and tapped into the inlet manifold on the blank in the casting near the MAP sensor.. Easy whilst the manifold is off the head (no shavings into motor)

    Pics soon when I get things finished...

    Will be interesting to compare the outputs.. May even "T" in a mechanical gauge as well for comparison.

    I was looking at the inlet manifold as well.....Do I, Don't I

    Then considered the cost if I stuff it up and figured the EGR tube at $60 compared to whatever for the manifold. I still have the original EGR if it went pear shaped. Clear choice for a daily driver.

    I don't know where everyone is taking their reading to get to 14.5psi and beyond.

    bennys fender has run 25psi with a boost box??
