    Rivetnuts/threaded metal inserts

Sometime ago I read a thread on this forum on a type of metal stud/ fastener similar to a rivetnut. Done the searches but cannot locate it as it has a different name/description? Trying to replace crap plastic screw inserts with some real metal - any ideas, thanks.

In Oz they are often referred to as Nutserts.... (Universal fasteners knows them as this)

You can also get male and female threaded pop rivets. King Klik and Marston are two makes that come to mind.

Wouldn't be able to live without my nutsert gun, Textron brand, made in England, bought through Coventry Fasteners (was Universal Fasteners) in Adelaide.

Gee, thanks for all your help. I think Ill try Daves technique first as I intend to use s/steel nutserts (this seems to be the name- "nutserts"- that the retailers understand- Coventry fasteners at Wacol-oops is that a plug-most helpful). One of the guys there tried a similar tool to the Textron on s/steel nutserts and the bit that goes into the nutsert broke and then described Daves technique how he did it. Have you used the Textron on s/steel nutserts? Im hoping to have a go at this on Friday and let you all know- thanks again.

No not yet as I haven't needed them. I would always ask the tool supplier before trying a particular nutsert as they would know what works. Mine is a small one I bought for M5 inserts, you would probably need a bigger one. The threaded pull rod comes out real easy so I would even suggest buying a spare one in your size!

    Nutserts

You are probably right- to collapse a s/steel insert would require some force and i think Daves technique with a high tensile bolt and nut and enough leverage will do the job-privided I can stop the insert from turning as I apply the pressure-- to get a tool that can collapse the steel inserts costs heaps so Im remaining optimistic, let you know

I had trouble stopping the nut from turning.
I drilled a hole the same size as the bolt in a strip of thin flat steel at one end. Put this directly between the nut you are rotating and the nutsert. Hold the spanner on the bolt and this strip with one hand, rotate the nut to set the nutsert with the other. Stops the nutsert turning.
