    update

    I did a bit of phone surfing today with some interesting results

    If i compare everything to the two expensive prices for a reco motor
    Repco 4600+1200 deposit
    OR
    The place that was going to buy it from repco and charge a markup he said around 6000 fitted but he didnt mention if my block was stuffed that would be an extra 1200

    1X second hand low k Holden EFI V8 out of a VS commodore with trans and all the dangly bits 1500-2500 depending on witch place i go to


    Add the Marks conversion kit and it is still cheaper than a reco stocky

    The bonus of converting $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    I will never have to pay stupid prices to fix the engine again it will never drop a liner or some funky disaster that ive never heard of before
    i can replace the entire trany and motor for around 2000 anywhere any time and i dont need a rover expert to do it

    I am seriously considering it i like a light car for steering but ill live with it and im no led foot so its not going to break Much

    or get a second hand rover v8 which will bolt straight in for say $1kish.

    If i could find a rover 3.5 same as mine not the carby version with some sort of warranty for $1000 id buy it

    But for $1000 theirs no warranty and ill be back in this spot quick smart and spending more money

    I have seen a few for sale here and on ebay some are dissmantled some complete and you know exactly whats happened they bought a new or reco motor to replace the one that they are selling now cause it was stuffed slap a head gasket in it maybe a set bearings and make out like its a good motor

    You know the add (new ring new bearings new head gasket)

    Thats code for its a crapper

    Why are you so resistant to replacing the motor with a good complete 3.9? The Holden motor will be a spiral and is not worth the ****ing about, if like you say you are no lead foot. Maybe if you needed big power for some reason, start to consider it, MAYBE. The 3.9 has been done so many times as a simple and cost effective upgrade. No conversion plates, no plumbing, no electrical issues. It will look stock and be as simple as stock to maintain. There is good one with warranty on ebay now, which you have been given link to, which would be perfect. It also makes no sense to me that you assume you will spending $5000 again in a few months either, unless you feel that people selling old Holdens are more trustworthy than those who Land Rovers. IMHO.

    The reason why people are telling you just to replace your engine with a S/H 3.5 is because that is the best option,they are cheap and available so fit one and reco your old one if it is possible and refit at a later date.The holden engine is a minefield of problems and it's not a drop in and drive away,and if you think that it will be more reliable if you boil it like the original you are living in dream land.You are turning a simple engine swap into a drama.     So what about a GMH engine and GMH transmission becomes unreliable

    If the transfer case is the only thing that can break its ok ill change that to

    Im pretty sure im not going to break anything else **** they fit 5.0 motors to hilux's and they don't come with EFI v8 from factory

    From what i have been reading it is pretty much a bolt in conversion all the bits are supplied


    No more complicated than fitting a 308 in a LC torana

    Im just putting up reasonable reasons why its an option

    Up to now people are saying no dont do it but no body has said hay look here is a good engine supplier for a rover V8

    They have just said they would go get a wrecker motor

    But as i have said i don't have that option if i break down its a big hassle not just a tow round the corner

    So i need either a reco motor or a viable alternative

    All this is just ideas and i really haven't decided what ill do till i talk to the local mechanic on Tuesday if he wants to rebuild mine and just send it all out for machining and put it together i will probably do that

    BUT i would like to know all the options before i cough out big money on anyhting

    But i don't want to pay around 5000 for a reco motor

    From what ive read on this site these engines have known serious problems
    I have never heard of a slipped liner in my life on a holden motor i have seen rods poking out all strange places but never heard of that one

    I've heard horror stories about the 5.7 Holden engine too. Doesn't mean that all 5.7's are bad, nor do a few horror stories mean that the 3.5/3.9 is bad. A well maintained 3.5/3.9 will last for 300 to 400 000 km without too much trouble. If you get a second hand engine from a crashed wreck you will likely do quite well. And it bolts in legally without any fuss. Whereas a 5.7 conversion is not a 5 minute job, you will need exhausts, mounts, ECU's, adaptor kits, probably a radiator upgrade, engineering approval. Not the cheaper option at all.
