Mine over heated, found the reserve empty topped her and still over heated.
Found I had a air lock in the system, bled the system and away she went.
The problem was a very small leak from the back of the water pump.
hey guys ,
My wife was out in our 300tdi fender today , the temp started rising and low coolant light came straight on .... water gurgling and pumping out of the lid on the reservoir ...
My heart sank ... and now it takes it NO TIME to get to 90 on the temp gauge.
Are my thoughts correct ... head gasket ?
I have checked all hoses and no leaks ...
ideas and input please

Check this out befor stressing over the head. I suffered from the very same issue crossing the nulabor towing a over size load.
When the engine is warm look at the block beside / behind the alt for coolant res. If it is leaking you will also be able to smell coolant as it evaporates.
Hope this helps .

When I'm here I want to be out there.
I would first check your water pump and thermo...are working correctly
but I had very similar problem but without the gurgling/pressurising of the coolant system although no over heating and it was the head
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
thanks guys I got Lucus super mech coming out next week .
He seems to think a "flow issue" being a thermostat and or blocked up radiator
went down Repco whacked a new thermostat in .. tried to heat up the old one to open but she was jammed shut .
Filled her up again drove maybe 5 km and water bubbling out via the overflow / reservoir ... So dunno if I have over filled it and the excess is coming out ?
wait n see tomorrow morning will try again .. the temo is now happily sitting around 70-80 degs
mmmm really sounds like the head to me mate....only going on my recent experiences

guess I need one of those snifter things that they use to detect the gases mixed with coolant ..
oh well my trust is in LUCUS and hopefully a rodded out radiator
Brad
If you use a "sniffer" on a diesel KEEP testing if its a negative result.
Get it realy hot,ie big hill at highway speed.
Diesels produce low amounts of CO emmisions compared to a petrol. The test is for CO in the coolant.
Take a slight yellow tinge in the bubbles as posative, they wont turn the liquid yellow as a posative petrol would.
Hope its in the cooling system not the head.

depending how old it is it could be a bungged up radiator but that doesnt usually happen over night, about $100 to get it rodded out though to check it.
Also try just taking the thermostat out if it still overheads you've ruled that out too. Cross you fingers and hope its just an airlock.
