Drop the serpentine belt off and give them a spin by hand, you will be able to tell if they are running smooth or not, also while the belt is off check the alternator and steering pump for smoothness as well, Regards Frank

    Thanks Frank,
I removed the belt, checked the bearings (seem OK) and ran the engine breifly; noise still evident.
I'm tending to think its the pump, as sugged by Chucaro.
    Cheers,
    Taz

    Check air filter mounts

I had a strange noise from my 300Tdi.

after a bit of searching I found the air filter was bouncing against the fuel injector lines.

It looked like one of the rubbers was perished but infact once I pulled off the air filter it turned out that all needed replacing.

    Its worth a shot.
