    Yellowbelly travels

If you had to drink South Australian Murray water you too would travel a distance too.

Just goes to prove there is a lot of water between them. With the recent rains they will probably move even further afield.

Love a good feed of Yellowbelly. Caught plenty in impoundments like Windemere near Mudgee and in Dimantina lakes

Chenz nice fish there mate, I have never fished for them, but Lake eildon has a good population. They must be too easy to catch as they have decreased the bag limit. Seems once you hit a schooll they are there for the slaughter. So hence the limit has been reduced
I hear they are no much good to eat when they get big, due to the amount of fat that have. Is that true?
    Cheers,
    Mario

Like most fish, just because they are there doesn't mean that they will bite. I have seen some sitting under a log and have thrown every lure, spinner, fly and bait at them and they just swim out of the road and take up their original position. Next day same spot they will bite anything.

Caught heaps one weekend at Burunjuck Dam. Went back a fortnight later and didn't catch one.

The larger ones can be a bit fatty around the belly. I just take the top of the fillet which is usually pretty good despite how big they are. Add plenty of salt as being a freshwater fish they need some seasoning.

Have caught plenty up in the Hume dam/weir, but I'm not a fan of them. Got mates that cant get enough.
I'd much rather catch a Trout and devour that

Speaking of which, cant wait to head up towards Adaminaby this season some time. Been wanting to get back there for a long time, this year could be it.

Marcus, here's something to to get the juices flowing.
A mate/customer of mine, is out there doing it at the moment, the lakes are still fishable over winter. why wait until the streams open.
Here are some pics he sent me a month ago.
Yes it might be snowing and cold, but he fly fishes and does well. And cold weather means no king browns harrassing you

    He practises catch and release.
AHHH, Fires are for pussy cats, I took a couple of mates fly fishing at Arthurs lake in Tassie one November, it started to snow they moaned about wanting to light a fire. I just fished, the casting warms you up good. Needless to say I caught trout and they caught colds.
Fires are for after, cooking the catch. I had my fire in the great lakes hotel bistro during dinner that night.

Fly fishing in NZ in July and had to stop every few minutes to put the rod tip in my mouth as the line was freezing solid to the top runner.

    Caught nice fish though

Damn, that's cold. Can't say I've ever had line freeze up on me in the rod.

I really must get my act together and learn how to fly fish.
