An interesting way to ruin a long weekend

Well, long weekend, had to can a camping trip do a bit of house hunting in the morning due to owner selling my rental place. That part out of the way, started thinking all is not lost, I'll pack the gear and head down to Yalwal on monday with Scouses trip.

Parked in cronulla for lunch, got back in the car, reversed back to give myself some room to get out of the park spot, put it into neutral for a second, and then..... The gear stick falls flat on the floor....

The gear stick has sheared off clean at the top of the gear box. So stuck in neutral, half up the kerb, it ain't going anywhere. NRMA flat bed to the rescue. So it's now on a hoist at Opposite Lock Rockdale to await some repairs.... Long weekend gone!

On a positive note, this could have happened in much worse places leaving me in a whole lot worse situations. And lucky a few of the boys just happened to be in the workshop at 5:30 on a saturday afternoon. Otherwise it was going to spend the weekend sitting in the back carpark.

Unfortunately in the heat of the moment I didn't take any pics. And yes, if you saw a red county on a flat bed between Cronulla and Rockdale, it was me.

My series 2 did this 35 years ago. I drilled out the ball where it was broken off till the hole was the same dia as the gear lever & tapped the gear lever into the hole. A quick spot of welding so it didn't swivel around & it was good for the other 8 years I had it..- just an inch shorter

It is common with Landrover gearboxes, particularly the Series ones. Also common with Isuzus, probably because of the long life of the engine means they do more miles.

Had the same thing happen to me in Mudgee a year or two back - had the gear lever out and welded and back together in about an hour and a half, thanks to the NRMA bloke. Still going, but I have a new lever in the back.

Mine did that on 1st Jan 2000. Apparently it's not Y2K compliant.

Mine was due to a dodgey weld, not factory gear lever either. Turns out there were two dodgey welds, I found the other a few years later the same way. First time I was able to drive home and even stop for an ice-cream, but I did slice up my fingers doing it.
Second time I was in 4th gear and found out that yes I do have one gear that will span from 0-100km/h.

All my series Landy's have done this.
I now carry jumper leads and a few 2.5mm welding rods in case something annoying like this ever happens.

Well the county is back on the road, the guys drilled out the ball and welded the lever back in place, but now the gear stick sits further to the left (4th feels like it is almost where 1st used to be, and 1st is a long way over). Is this easy to adjust or better off putting up with it/looking for another to replace it with and keep the welded one as a spare?

    easy to fix.

remove the lever, heat it up with the gas axe and bend it to the right.
